M81 & M82 in a sea of IFN

Excited to present this image of a region of the sky that I've wanted to properly capture for years. Going all the way back to 2020 when I tried imaging M81/M82 with my 135mm lens, stock DSLR, and bortle 4 skies, I was so excited to see the faint integrated flux nebula in the background start to show up after a few hours of integration. Fast forwarding to 2026, having several years of processing experience and gear upgrades under my belt, here is my latest capture.

The new MARS survey integrated with the MultiscaleGradientCorrect process in PixInsight was the key to getting a high quality image out of this data. Without that powerful gradient correction, the IFN would have been buried in blotchy and complex light pollution gradients. Thanks to the PI team for their incredible work on this invaluable tool.

1 Super Nova Remnant

✨ 1020 hours of exposure — and a bonus discovery!

Today, on behalf of the team, I’m proud to present the most ambitious project any of us has ever undertaken.

 The goal?

To reveal a rarely imaged supernova remnant, right in the heart of the Cassiopeia constellation (the famous W).

The cherry on top?

A discovery: a shell-shaped signal never revealed before. A planetary nebula? Not certain yet — the associated white dwarf hasn’t been detected, but it may simply be hidden.

It is therefore with great excitement that we present an object that will be catalogued as BKDWAH-1, which we have named ā€œCassiopeia’s Opal.ā€
