Let’s Explore my TBR shelves as I continue to I’m highlight some of my unread books in a series of #tenonmytbr posts, alphabetically by author. ✨ Join me!

Here are ten books written by authors with I names. Plus a jug that decorates my bookshelves. 📸 They are my usual mishmash of backlist titles. Have you read any of these?

📖 The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe, a 1958 novel about young women in the publishing industry.

🚂 Kaleidoscope by J. Robert Janes, a WWII mystery set on a train in German occupied France.

👵🏻 The True Deceiver by Tove Jansson in a cool NYRB Classics edition.

🌲 The Country of the Pointed Firs and Other Stories by Sarah Orne Jewett is an 1896 classic of American literature set in Maine.

🪖 War Trash by Ha Jin about a Chinese soldier sent to fight on the communist side in the Korean War.

🍵 Lulu in Marrakech by Diane Johnson, a humorous spy adventure.

👨🏻‍⚕️ An Error of Judgement by Pamela Hansford Johnson. Anthony Burgess included this on his list of 99 best novels written in English.

❄️ White Sky, Black Ice by Stan Jones, the first in a mystery series set in Alaska.

👩🏻 Inventing Memory by Erica Jong follows four generations of women in a Jewish-American family.

🎭 Three Comedies (Volpone, The Alchemist, Bartholomew Fair) by Ben Jonson. I’m trying to read more plays, particularly classics.

I tagged a few to play along. ✨ If you see this and it looks like fun, please share your TBR stacks. Get creative if you don’t have 10 of any letter. Fewer books, combine letters, use letters of the titles instead, whatever. It’s supposed to be fun!

“I am no novel-reader—I seldom look into novels—Do not imagine that I often read novels—It is really very well for a novel.” Such is the common cant. “And what are you reading, Miss—?” “Oh! It is only a novel!” replies the young lady, while she lays down her book with affected indifference, or momentary shame. “It is only Cecilia, or Camilla, or Belinda”; or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language. - from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

—One of my favorite rants in all of classic literature. 👏

Someone told me it was the last day of July & what? Jane Austen July got away from me like Mr. Elliot ran from Elizabeth—or maybe it was more like Willoughby ghosting Marianne. I've been experiencing BIG Marianne energy this month & I'm just hoping that August will bring a bit more calm to balance out the drama. In keeping with this theme, here's a look at the biggest book in my collection: the Midpoint Press special limited-edition Jane Austen: The Illustrated Library, 2006. This gorgeous chonker contains all six novels, including 60+ color plates & 100 b&w illustrations by Hugh Thompson & CE Brock. It weighs 9+ lbs. What's the biggest book you own? ♡ 𝑁𝑜𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑖

𝑆𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑠 & 𝐽𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑡

It’s Obon season & our Japanese summer festivals are in full swing here, so I thought I’d share some happy memories from all the fests we've had so far. The reading has been a bit of a slump. How is everyone? ♡ 𝑁𝑜𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑖

𝑆𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑠

𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑦: 𝐴 𝑁𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑙 𝑏𝑦 𝑀𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑘𝑜 𝐴𝑜𝑦𝑎𝑚𝑎
🥮 I wish Honeydome cookies were real. Loved the episodic style. The goal: to be a wise librarian like Ms. Komachi.

𝑆𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑡 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑃𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 𝑏𝑦 𝐷𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑆𝑢𝑘𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑤𝑎
🍡 This was so much deeper (& more political) than I expected it to be—& I really should have expected it. Craved 𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑦𝑎𝑘𝑖 for a full week until I finally caved & got some.

𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑉𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐶ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑦 𝐵𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑜𝑚 𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑝 𝑏𝑦 𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑢𝑦𝑎 𝐴𝑠𝑎𝑘𝑢𝑟𝑎
🌸 LOVE the book playlist! Another episodic, melancholic read—expected this time. The reading has been bittersweet as of late, but at least there’s a cat.

𝑀𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑠ℎ𝑖 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟'𝑠 𝐸𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑉𝑜𝑙 𝟸 𝑏𝑦 𝑌𝑢𝑘𝑖 𝑈𝑟𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑎
🎐 Love this series & the anime is my favorite, but… why is there always a thing with the eye? I cannot handle eye injuries / eye gore. Just don’t go near my eyes, please.

𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑏𝑦 𝑆𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑎 𝑆𝑜𝑡𝑡𝑜 𝑌𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑜
🍜 This was a fun Ghibli adventure, but it felt like the story was always trying to run away from the author, trying to become something else.

🕯Mindig szerettem, ahogy Austen elekezdi a regényeit.

🌬Viszont amikor Catherine megérkezik Northanger Abbey-be, annak a tipikus viharos estének a leírása a kedvencemmé vált.

“She knew what she liked; she knew what she loved. And isn’t that the main thing?” (GIRL WITH DOVE by Sally Bayley) As I remind myself I know how to love although you may at some point in your life have turned fairy in order to survive the world — Jane Eyre @je_library Still, you can love and care as you remember Trace… the girl in care @careexperiencedmovement

𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠

My life changed the day I discovered bookstagram. That’s not an exaggeration, right? My walls covered in sagging bookshelves & the maze of book stacks that leads from my bedroom to the kitchen can attest to it—I don’t have enough wall space for all these book recs, but please keep them coming my tbr can handle it I promise—! So, my current living situation is “because of bookstagram.”

But the greatest change that I’m currently reflecting on, the one thing that I will never take for granted happened about a month into my first account, when I finally felt safe enough to just talk about books, as an unprompted main topic of conversation, to share that joy freely with others who wouldn’t scoff & roll their eyes at me for this passion—because I finally found people who know what magic exists in books. Kind, intelligent bookworms who are constantly inspiring me to read, to write, to create bookish content—& more: to go out & do bookish things, travel to bookish places, imbue my every waking minute with excessive bookishness if I so desire—okay, you get it.

I never really knew this freedom before I stumbled upon that hashtag. Before bookstagram, I loved books alone. So, thank you so much, book friends, those who have been with me from the early days—those who 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑑 ily—& those whom I’m just starting to know & cherish. Thank you for your book recs, your inspiring posts & conversation. Thank you for making me feel safe. ♡ 𝑁𝑜𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑖
