✦ Special ACADIA issue of IJAC NOW PUBLISHED ✦

REBALANCE & RECIPROCITY
Emergent Topics in Architectural Computing

The new IJAC-ACADIA Special issue turns to architectural computing as a field in need not only of innovation, but of critical self-reflection. It brings together research that critically examines how architectural computing can recalibrate relationships among designers and tools, individuals and collectives, humans and nonhumans, and materials and systems, while structured around four interconnected themes:

✦ Computing with Nature
✦ Situated Urban Intelligence
✦ Reciprocal Craft, Labor, and Learning
✦ Visual Tactics in Architectural Computing

Guest Editors: Dana Cupkova, Tsz Yan Ng, Shermeen Yousif, Daniel Koehler, Edvard P. G. Bruun, Kyle Steinfeld, and Galo Canizares.

Our sincere thanks to all contributing authors and reviewers.

#11 Contemporary classic

AI is already part of our lives even though we might not realise it. It is in our phones, filtering spam, identifying Facebook friends, and classifying our images on Instagram. It is in our homes in the form of Siri, Alexa and other AI assists. It is in our cars and our planes. AI is literally everywhere. Artworks generated by AI have won international prizes, and have been sold at auction. But what does AI mean for the world of design? This issue of AD explores the nature of AI, and considers its potential for architecture. But this is no idle speculation. Architects have already started using AI for architectural design and fabrication. Yet – astonishingly – there has been almost no debate about AI within the discipline of architecture so far. Surely, nothing can be more important for the profession of architecture right now. The issue looks at all aspects of AI: its potential to assist architects in designing buildings so that it becomes a form of ‘augmented intelligence’; its capacity to design buildings on its own; and whether AI might open up an extraordinary new chapter in architectural design.

Probably the last post about the MicroHabitat δ!

MicroHabitat δ through the lens of my friends and colleagues; also my friends and colleagues through the lens of MicroHabitat (and myself!)

Slide 10 by Ehsan Ebrahimzadeh

Micro-Habitat δ is part of the Micro-Habitat installation series, proposing a real-time cyber-physical immersive experience enabling its audience to shift scale and their visuospatial/experiential perceptions.

Micro-Habitat aims to revisit human/nature relationship with a focus on the issue of “scale” and through the lens of immersive and interactive technologies as potential experiential mediums.
Shifting scale from micro to macro has always produced a creative friction in many art forms and mediums. Micro-Habitat tries to question the possibility of these scale shifts—in this case scaling down to micro scale—as real-time immersive spatial/experiential mediums.

If in Lexington and you have a chance to stop by campus, you should check out the exhibition, “The Serlio Code” By Jean Jaminet [ Kent State University ], Gabriel Esquivel, and Shane Bugni [ Texas A&M University ] - April 11 - 25, Pence Hall First Floor.
-
The exhibition explores part-to-whole relationships in classical architecture reconsidered and recontextuialized through artificial intelligence and generative adversarial networks (GAN) to produce strange new forms and relationships that were then digitally fabricated.
.
Each object is fascinating by itself, but with them all filling the first floor, it radically transforms the space. The research points toward our near future in practice and the need for more research and new pedagogical approaches to what, why, and how we teach and work.

Thanks for the great lecture and for letting us temporarily live with the work.

Jean Jaminet, Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture at Kent State University, will give a lecture on Monday, April 11 at 5:00 p.m. in Pence 209.

Titled “Intelligence Beyond Serlio,” the lecture examines the illustrations of Sebastiano Serlio through the lens of artificial intelligence. Technological insights are disclosed that realign ideas about language and drawing that have been fundament to the building arts. Experimental design research is presented that stimulates alternative modes of perception and alludes to new languages and forms of expression yet to be discovered.

Last night saw the opening of FreelandBuck's Gallery titled "Views From The Field". David Freeland and Brennan Buck of @freelandbuck introduced the exhibit followed by a conversation joined by CAED faculty - Kathryn Strand and Jean Jaminet.

Special thanks to the faculty and students involved with installation. "Views From The Field" is open in the Armstong Gallery now until April 15.

PLAT 9.5 Leave Space is continuing its rolling release this week with a conversation between Jean Jaminet, Adam Fure, and Ellie Abrons. In “Cut with Scissors,” the contributors discuss the importance of confronting the realities of the contemporary world. They comment that, when you raze buildings and cart debris away to the landfill, those debris are not going away. “To accept rubble and debris,” they argue, “is a necessary confrontation with our world as it exists.”

The article is available digitally on our website for free—accessible through a link in our bio.

PLAT 9.5: Leave Space, an independent architecture journal published by the students of Rice Architecture, is out today!

On a rolling release, the first half of the issue features conversations with Marcelo López-Dinardi, Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim (Ibañez Kim), Nader Tehrani, Jean Jaminet and T+E+A+M, and Jesús Vassallo. The first five articles are available at platjournal.com/ninepointfive, and the second batch of five will be released next Monday, September 6th.

PLAT 9.5: Leave Space

Searching for a response to Plat’s last theme, Commit, Plat ran into something of a roadblock. Any attempt to take a stance—even a stance of doing nothing—can be wrapped up into this act of commitment posed as some kind of totalizing ethos. There is no space even to respond.

So, in part Plat responds to this act of encompassing all attempts at action and inaction alike, and in part they respond to the term itself. PLAT 9.5: Leave Space questions the idea of the architect as one who always knows what’s best. It promotes humbleness and asks if architects might take a step back rather than always seeking out the foreground. It seeks the creative potential in the inevitable distance between architect and architecture. A building results from a complex interaction between forces at different scales, from socio-political conditions to community development initiatives, from the involvement of non-humans to the relationships between architects, engineers, and laborers.

But Plat does not wish to be prescriptive. They think of Leave Space less as a theme to be upheld and more as an entry point, and they have set up the issue as a platform for raising questions without imposing answers. Each piece is in an interview format, bringing in different voices from students to scholars and practitioners. The contributors all had a say in what their interview would be about and were free to make what they would of the issue’s title. As a result, each piece has a unique ethos—something in between the contributors’ thoughts and the interviewers' curiosity—to speculate on what it means when we Leave Space.
