This is Justin Cryer. Former Division I player. College coach. Spent 6 years as an area scout with the Houston Astros. Now works in the MLB division at Marucci Sports. Baseball dad. He said something in our recent podcast interview that stops most dads cold.
⠀
Not every at-bat is huge. Not every tournament is critical. Not every loss resets the season. Yet we live like it does because we need the money we spent to mean something. We need the drive to matter. We need the sacrifice to land.
⠀
Your son already forgot about it by Wednesday.
⠀
The ones whose kids still love this game at 16 are the ones who can tell the difference between what actually matters and what just feels urgent in the moment. The full interview is on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts under Chasing Baseball Dreams. Listen to the whole thing.

Texas Longhorns Season Preview 🤘⚪️

After finishing last season with a Cheez-It Bowl victory over Michigan, Texas enters 2026 as the team to beat. With stars like Arch Manning, Ryan Wingo, Colin Simmons, and a roster loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, the Longhorns have all the pieces to make a national title run. The schedule won’t be easy with showdowns against Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Missouri, and other tough opponents, meaning depth will be tested throughout the season. Prediction: Texas finishes 11-1, wins the SEC, and earns a top spot in the College Football Playoff.

What do you think Texas will finish next season?

A lot of parents say they want their son to be tougher, more athletic, and better able to handle failure.

But then they keep him in the one environment that feels the most comfortable.

In this clip, Justin Cryer — former scout, travel ball coach, and dad — talks about making his son play flag football. Not because he loved it or even wanted to, but because Justin believed it would make him a better baseball player.

And it did.

Why?

Because adversity matters. Body awareness matters. Movement matters. Learning how to show up when something feels hard matters.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your son’s baseball career is push him outside his comfort zone.

Parents, one of the most important things you can do is know your kid.

Not just whether he’s talented.

But whether he actually loves baseball.
Whether he can handle what comes with the next level.
Whether his personality fits the path you’re pushing him toward.

In this clip, Justin Cryer shares something he used to tell families when he was scouting for the Astros: if you make decisions based on industry noise, outside pressure, or what you want, without first understanding your child, you’re opening the door to a mistake.

Don’t let all the noise drown out the one voice you should know best: your kid’s.

Your son may play all summer and still not be developing the way you think he is.

That’s the conversation in this episode.

I sat down with former Astros scout Justin Cryer and current Director of Sports Marketing at @maruccisports who’s also a travel ball coach & dad — to talk about what actually matters in player development, what scouts are really evaluating, why 50 games + 50 practices beats 100 games, and how parents should think about helping their son the right way.

We also got into what happens inside an MLB draft room, why body type and makeup matter more than most families realize, and why playing another sport may be one of the best things you do for your son.

Pretty cool to see that puff at contact.

Pretty sure that ball was driven pretty hard 😂

Getting some time on the field to see the ball flight, spin, exit velocity, launch angle and direction is the best way of learning.

Cage hitting is great - but nothing beats on field- live arm at bats.

Kev got a bit RCKLESS for his bday. He couldn’t wait to get to a field for some first swings. He says he loves it! @maruccisports 💪🏾 #Marucci #CatXRckless
