POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

There is something overwhelmingly mortal about our desire to preserve what antiquity is determined to destroy. Frank Van Passel (@frankvanpassel) situates an improbable love affair within the uneasy stillness of Brussels in May 1940, when Europe stands upon the precipice of catastrophe in The Soundman. Against this gathering darkness, a gifted sound technician, Berre (@jef.hellemans), and an aspiring actress, Elza (@femke_vanhove), discover intimacy within the enchanted sphere of radio.

Yet to regard this purely as a period romance would be to mistake its surface for its substance. Van Passel’s more intriguing proposition concerns the psychology of perception: what does it mean to inhabit a universe that one cannot entirely trust, and to seek refuge in the invisible? Sound becomes an existential metaphor, reminding us that circumstance is not exhausted by what the eye can apprehend. The unseen, like the unspoken, may possess a greater emotional truth than the immediately visible.

Radio, too, assumes an interrogative significance. It manufactures phantom cosmoses even as the actual circle disintegrates. Here lies the picture’s central paradox: people require stories not because reality is insufficiently dramatic, but because reality can be intolerably cruel. Imagination becomes an act of cerebral resistance.

The encroaching war lends this tenderness its moral gravity. As prejudice, political cowardice and the collapse of social certainties unmask the fragility of civilisation, the film surreptitiously interrogates the distinction between only flourishing and remaining human. Recitation, after all, does not reveal character exclusively through grandiose gestures; it exposes it through the small compromises by which ordinary individuals reconcile themselves to extraordinary wickedness.

The Soundman ultimately suggests that love is neither an escape from history nor a guarantee against suffering. It is something more defiant: the insistence that, even as the world descends into silence, another earthborn voice bides worth hearing.

Finally ‘Radioman/The Soundman’ came to dutch theatres!
For this amazing film we created some really cool studiosets. Like these 1940s radio play studios.

Lots of love for the ever inspiring writer/director @frankvanpassel! Big shoutout to the beautiful lighting and shots of @laurensdegeyter.

Biggest respect to @margriet.procee and Mariël Hoevenaars . The Costume, Make-up and Art triangle worked so amazingly well for this project.
