Last night we turned Chad Oliver @old_man_night pro. It’s an honor we bestow on our favs & one that hasn’t been granted in a few years. Chad is a sweet, quiet, thoughtful friend who is an absolute terror on a skateboard. @sponeck once said, “Chad doesn’t know anything about skateboarding” while watching him attack a scary, impossible section of a spot that no one else considered skateable. @dudebruh refined that to “he doesn’t know how hard skating is” describing Chad meandering to a thigh high, skinny, round rail, hopping into a nosegrind-ish stall, grabbing indy, and then popping out like a kid seeing how pieces of a puzzle fit together.

It’s not a stretch to say if you’ve skated with Chad, he’s probably your favorite skater. His skating is bonkers, unconventional, adrenaline-inducing, & frankly just fun to watch.

A few months ago he lost his dad. So one night a group of us were drinking at Psols & workshopping ideas about how best to show him what he means to our community. The answer was obvious. We were going to turn Chad pro.

What followed was several months of design (thanks @epjessen ), sourcing wood (thanks @okskateboardsmfg ) & then keeping a small group in the loop to plan a surprise party. The smile on Chad’s face was everything we hoped it would be.

We talk about community, how it’s missing, the loneliness epidemic. We don’t live that way here, not in New Orleans, & not at CP3. We’ve created a space where people connect, form bonds, & play. We live in a city where we depend on our neighbors, where community is your literal lifeline in times of disaster, where social clubs & Mardi Gras krewes are the connective tissue of life. Adult skateboarding thrives in New Orleans. It’s not about tricks, or status, it’s the way we love & show up for each other.

So many showed up last night, old and new. It was touching. @freemovementstretch said “we don’t live a real life.” But my fav quote was from @willypshreds (newish head) to @wavytrillbaby after being reintroduced to @sponeck (OG) after confusion over whether they’d met. He said, “so many friends, it’s hard to remember if I’ve met everybody… not a bad problem to have.”

Indeed. Congrats Chad.
