@studiobalestra is pleased to announce our representation of artist Jeff Wenzel @jeffwenzelart , introducing a selection of his sculptural works in clay to the gallery.

Born in Denver in 1959, Wenzel developed his practice across sculpture and painting. At the University of California, Berkeley, he studied with Peter Voulkos, also serving as his teaching assistant, and studied drawing and painting with Elmer Bischoff and Joan Brown, influential figures associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement. He earned his MA in 1981 and MFA in 1983.

After teaching pottery and sculpture in the Bay Area, Wenzel returned to Denver in 1989 and began creating large-scale paintings using mixed materials on paper and wood. This dialogue between painting and sculpture offers a context for the works presented here, where surface, color, and volume carry equal weight.

We are particularly drawn to their folded planes and fragmented markings, which, to our eye, recall the spatial language of Cubism. The interplay of painted surface and sculptural form also brings to mind Picasso’s explorations in clay—an affinity we see in these works, expressed through Wenzel’s own material vocabulary.

Deep umber, muted olive, ash, and chalky ivory move across irregular contours and layered surfaces. Each sculpture holds an individual character within a shared language of folds, weight, and gesture.

Wenzel’s work is exhibited and collected nationally. We invite you to discover this selection at our Los Angeles gallery.

Artist Spotlight: Jeff Wenzel

We’re excited to share a new selection of ceramic works by Jeff Wenzel!

With a practice spanning both painting and sculpture, Wenzel’s artistic journey began with clay. His early experience in ceramics helped shape an approach to painting that emphasizes construction, layering, and the arrangement of forms, creating a natural connection between the two mediums.

While we’ve primarily featured his abstract paintings at Bardin Gallery, these new ceramic pieces offer another look at his ongoing exploration of form, texture, and abstraction.

We invite you to stop by and see these new works in person!

Raw, rustic, and absolutely soul-stirring. 🏺✨

There is a profound beauty in the intentional imperfection of @jeffwenzelart’s work. This piece speaks volumes through its textured surface and bold, grid-like markings—a true testament to the power of abstract expression in clay. It’s where ancient vibes meet modern artistry.

Here is piece 2 of 2 from our second deconstructing the figure class at the @artstudentsleaguedenver with instructor @jeffwenzelart. To start, I reviewed my various drawings from the previous class and grabbed a drawing of a shape that I loved and ripped it right in half. It appears on this piece—in pieces. This class, in particular, reinforced for me that what we create is temporary and perhaps precious for a time, but also transformable and capable of existing in a new place, in a new shape for another period of time…until the next iteration of form. 💓
