“Hey man, how many times I gotta tell you, man?”

“Cali’s All That” is a great Def Jef single that deserves its due.

It’s got a growling guest verse from Tone Loc (“Whatcha gonna do? Jump in the pool…watch your eyes, it might be full of brew!”) over a Matt Dike/Mike Ross production that was first to use Ronnie Hudson’s hook: “California knows how to party!”

Released in the winter of 1992, the song’s summery groove and party vibes seem seasonally hazy. The music video, directed by Kevin Bray, captures a glowing evening on Venice Beach and forever fresh steps by dancers the Soul Brothers. The passage of time gives it a golden glow.
