Today, @huntercollege @cunyedu made a major milestone with the inaugural event of the #JusticeImpact Center entitled, “Breaking Barriers; Building Bridges.” As an institution founded on the precipice of social justice, #HunterCollege now has a dedicated center to #support #advocate #represent students, family, and the broader community impacted by the criminal legal system. The director @enysay718 had a vision and executed it! Tonight we brought together academics, government officials, city workers, organizers, community-based programs, and other interested parties. As the co-faculty director, I got to sit on a panel with DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards, Superintendent of District 79 Glenda Esperance, and Chief of Safety and Prevention Partnerships for New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) Mark Rampersant. Yet, beyond our panel, this even was a LISTENING session! It was truly community voices meeting, sharing, engaging, and even debating how higher education can support those most impacted! This is the beginning & as I said, “as an abolitionist, our entire goal is to do the work to put these sorts of programs, centers, and need for events like this out-of-business.” And today’s event is meeting that moment! CUNY!
