THE NOVOCASTRIAN: YEAR ONE
Meet the artists: Jen Denzin

The Novocastrian: Year One celebrates the artists who have helped shape our first year of sharing Newcastle’s visual arts.

Jen Denzin was one of our Featured Artists earlier this year, and we are delighted to have her joining us for Year One. Her thoughtful and distinctive creative practice reflects the curiosity, experimentation and commitment to making that we love discovering in Newcastle's arts community. Jen is part of a remarkable group of artists whose individual approaches contribute to the richness and diversity of art being made in our region.

Over the coming days, we’ll introduce the artists taking part. Together, their work celebrates the character, culture and creative life of Newcastle and the Hunter.

Join us at Wester Gallery to celebrate Jen and the artists who make this such a vibrant place to live and create.

Opening: Friday 6 November 2026, 6 to 8pm
On show until Saturday 21 November 2026

“My benchmark is: do I like it? Does it interest me? Do I want to go and look at it?”

For Newcastle artist Jen Denzin, the best response to her work is not always the most comfortable one.

“My best response ever was, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to vomit.’”

Meet the wonderful Jen Denzin, this month’s Featured Artist on The Novocastrian.

Featured Artist: Jen Denzin

Jen Denzin is a local Newcastle artist making strange, immersive and wonderfully wacky environments.

In our Featured Artist interview, Jen talks about awkward moments, mismatched spaces, the feeling of being slightly unsettled, and the Newcastle art community that has shaped her practice.

The lovely artists from the new ArchipelaGO! Exhibition at Newcastle Art Space kindly invited me to write poems about their works! I found so much joy in this intricate and colourful exhibition.

1. The first poem is called "What if Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy were aliens? / Expired Delight" inspired by Space Sentiels by Jen Denzin. (Featuring special guest Colin.)

2. The second poem is called "Archipelago" inspired by the Floating Suburb Project by Aksara Harriram.

3. The third piece is called "Ocean of Hope" inspired by a short film by Vanessa and Richard Turton called M(OTHER)

4. The final piece is called "Unflinching" inspired by the Undone painting by Frances Johnston. (This one comes with a content warning.)

Congratulations on such a cool exhibition guys! Newcastle Art Space is open this weekend from 12-4, so go check ArchipelaGO out! Big thank you to @daisyloveblossom productions for filming these poems and @joey_writes_ for reading them out at the opening. 💖💖💖💖💖

ArchipelaGO! is showing now at Newcastle Art Space.

Bringing together Vanessa Turton, Aksara Harriram, Jen Denzin and Fran Johnston, the exhibition explores identity, connection and difference through four distinct practices.

Each body of work exists as its own island, while together they form a vivid, interconnected landscape of colour, memory and lived experience.

Showing at Newcastle Art Space until 12 July.
