From The Archives 📖 In 1663, John Eliot completed a translation of the Bible into a local Algonquian language so Scripture could be read and heard in the language of Native communities. It became the first complete Bible printed in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the earliest translations into a language that had no written form.

Gordon College Archives holds one of only about 30 surviving copies. Many were lost during King Philip’s War, and what remains carries not just the text, but a record of a language shaped in sound and later studied, revived, and currently spoken today.

The work took more than fourteen years and involved native-speaking collaborators. It’s a reminder of how language, faith, and history meet on the page, and continue beyond it.

This week I had the sweetest full-circle moment. I visited my Alma mater, Gordon College, to speak about my new children’s book. The wild thing? I never asked to be invited. I simply reached out to the library to donate a copy of God’s Name for Me. Not only did they say yes, they turned it into a full Fireside Chat with the Author event! 🥳

So Monday afternoon, I found myself in a cozy armchair with a mic in hand, surrounded by a few dozen students who were genuinely excited to hear about publishing. It didn’t feel real. I was one of them just a few years ago. What an honor.

⭐️ But the most meaningful moment happened afterward. A friend from college had come to hear me speak and she shared something that I can’t stop thinking about.

She said, “When I looked around at all the students listening to you, I remembered the night you captivated our entire floor with a story you wrote about people who lived in trees.”

Immediately, I flashed back to that tiny dorm room where I shared the fantasy story just for fun. More and more women kept slipping into the room until it was packed. I remember walking back to my room dazed by the excitement of sharing this story. Eventually, I was invited to a dorm event to give a reading of the first three chapters while my artist friends sketched character portraits and everyone listened with wide eyes.

✍️ It was the first time I realized that my words meant something to people outside my family. I had forgotten that moment, but she hadn’t. She had been carrying that memory all these years.

It reminded me how often others see something in us before we’re ready to see it in ourselves. And how the most loving thing is to keep encouraging and believing in them.

Creatives, keep creating. Keep sharing. You never know who’s been rooting for you all along. ❤️

Thank you @gordoncollege @jenkslibrary for inviting me. It was an honor 😊
