Have you ever known someone that would call or text you repeatedly if you didn't respond to them right away? Maybe you're that person, but I hope not!

When it comes to separation anxiety, we often attribute it to dogs being upset when we leave them. What I find is that it's less about being alone than it is them not knowing what to do when they can't have engagement on demand. When they get used to seeking us out for a pet or play or maybe just wanting to watch what we're doing, we become their main source of engagement. For a dog that doesn't know how else to pass the time, it's like someone who panics because someone they always talk to isn't answering. Instead of going about their day as they wait for a call back, they are anxiously waiting by the phone, texting and calling over and over.

Working on this doesn't have to go straight to practicing gradual departures. For more anxious dogs, even just having them tethered just across the room from you or behind a baby gate can trigger that same anxiety. If they can't handle you being 5 feet from you, you being gone completely is going to be a mountain of a challenge. Start small!
