I’m not one to get too sentimental on Instagram, but now that I’m officially finished with my undergrad and looking back at the “good ol’ days,” I have something I want to share.⁣
After my mom’s book Here Be Dragons came out and people got a small glimpse into my high school years, I’ve had so many moms and daughters ask me, “Did you ever find your people or your close friends?” I hadn’t realized that was a concern so many people share, and no one is really going to show that vulnerability to their peers, especially in high school.⁣
If I could go back to my college freshman self, I would tell her to buckle up and watch God work. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”⁣
Looking back, it is so obvious now that God walked before me on every path I took. He brought some of the most incredible people into my life exactly when I needed them. It wasn’t all perfect, but I did, in fact, find my people. Each season brought new friendships into my life that I couldn’t be more grateful for. I have found the girls who I get to cheer on and who cheer me on every step of the way. We started college as a bunch of random freshmen and have grown up together into semi-functional adults. We have held each other up during our failures and struggles, and celebrated each other’s successes and accomplishments. They have shown me what real friendship looks like.⁣
I hope this encourages those out there who are still praying and searching for whatever that thing is in your life that doesn’t currently look like you thought or hoped. It’s not easy to feel lonely, and I remember feeling that way a lot in high school. As someone on the other side, what I can promise is that God is walking before you and paving your path brick by brick. Trust what he is doing in your life, even if it doesn’t all seem clear right now, and I promise he will lead you to places and people that will be better than anything you can currently imagine.
