Fifteen years ago, when I first discovered the woman behind the magnificent gowns worn by First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, there was hardly any information about Elizabeth Keckley. The research was extensive and painstaking. Sometimes, I found myself at a dead end, wondering where the next clue might lead. But little by little, one discovery led to another, and what I uncovered became one of the most extraordinary stories I have ever had the privilege of telling.

Throughout this journey, something always felt guided. There were moments when I could not explain the way a door would open just when I needed it to, or how one discovery seemed to lead me precisely where I needed to go. More than once, I felt Elizabeth’s presence, as though she were gently leading me toward the pieces of her story that had been left behind.

Today, one of the things that makes me happiest is seeing Elizabeth Keckley finally receive the recognition she deserves. A woman whose name was once so difficult to find in the historical record is becoming increasingly familiar to new audiences. Information about her life and legacy is more accessible than it was when I began this journey, and I am grateful to witness the growing interest in her remarkable story. There is something deeply moving about watching a woman history once pushed to the margins begin to take her rightful place in the cultural conversation.

For more than a decade, this project has lived inside my heart. It has grown with me, challenged me, and reminded me why some stories refuse to let us go until they are told.

We are excited to finally bring this work to life. This is only the beginning.

We are proud to announce that actress Jennifer Birmingham Lee @jennblee has officially been cast as Mary Todd Lincoln in the upcoming table read of LIZZY: The Elizabeth Keckley Story, taking place on December 19 at the Willie Agee Playhouse in Inglewood, California.

Born in Benton, Louisiana, Jennifer brings her Southern roots and an accomplished screen presence to this pivotal role. Her television credits include Justified, The Good Doctor, American Crime Story, Revenge, and House of Lies.

A woman whose story is deeply intertwined with the worlds of fashion, politics, and personal transformation, Mary Todd Lincoln offers an extraordinary character to explore on stage. As First Lady during one of the most turbulent periods in American history, she was known for her keen interest in fashion and her elaborate wardrobe—a world in which Elizabeth Keckley, the formerly enslaved woman who became her trusted dressmaker and confidante, would occupy a remarkable place.

Jennifer’s Southern origins offer a compelling point of connection to the character, while her performance will help bring to life the complexities of a woman whose public position often concealed private struggles, and whose relationship with Keckley transcended the boundaries of their vastly different social circumstances.

This December, audiences will have the opportunity to witness the first stages of this developing theatrical production as actors bring these extraordinary historical figures and their intertwined stories to life.

Join us on December 19 at the Willie Agee Playhouse in Inglewood, California, and witness history take the stage.

Happy 16th Anniversary @jennblee ❤️ my best friend, wife…my favorite person who sings at the top of her lungs in the car, who always makes everyone feel seen and leaves them laughing and better, the person who always sees the best in a person even on their worst days, who sees everything as glass half full, a fierce mama bear, who still wonders in awe with the magic of the ocean (especially when we drive over Las Virgines)…the person who gives “cheerleader” its definition (she’s always rooting for people to win)…I know, doesn’t sound real…but she is all that. I got blessed to hang out, love and fight the hard battles with the best human I know. Love you @jennblee more every day. Even on the days you question “why would you park here, when you could’ve parked there?!” 😂❤️

Why be boring when you can dance and walk 4 miles in your starry night poncho in the rain ✨ 🌧️🌧️🌧️ Also small win today normally when it’s rainy and not a lot of sunshine I tend to get overly tired which means I reach for junk food and comfort food because it’s rainy and I get the blues alittle but NOT TODAY!!!!!!!! I was so proud of myself because those urges kicked in big time and I told myself your on a good streak don’t ruin it with food that’s not going to help your body!!!! I ate my healthy food and told myself better choices less depression less anxiety you got this!!! I also took deep breaths because the rain blues did kinda hit me but after relaxing my mind I shut down those junk food cravings!!!!
