Artist @jenneferhoffmann overlooking Lake Michigan, where she swims year round, before heading back to brew coffee and settle into her home studio.

Her daily winter swims are the subject of ‘Swimming Through’, a 2022 New Yorker short documentary by Samantha Sanders, which follows Jennefer and two friends braving the icy waters together at sunrise. What started as a way to cope with emotional difficulties became a therapeutic ritual and the gift of getting to know new friends.

In clay-making, Jennefer likewise finds a sense of community, along with the therapeutic value of lending herself fully to the object and process at hand.

Clay Tray Paintings of Martha Mae
Stoneware with glaze

Jennefer Hoffmann is an artist living and working in Chicago. Hoffmann’s emotional and intuitive studio practice produces sculptural forms that are open objects for contemplation. The forms are a means to explore the world around — whether they are forms detailing personal intimacy, or forms reflecting her observations and feelings about community and society in times of upheaval, empathy, and change.

An immersive Martha experience in celebration of her 15th year.

Hand-formed ceramic vase with overlapping petal-like details by artist @jenneferhoffmann

Jennefer lets ideas for forms and details come into being spontaneously, through an exchange between the clay and her aesthetic instinct. She alters between techniques of pinching and slab-building, her hands serving as different instruments to create varying textures and distinct expressions.

Jennefer’s interest in pottery blossomed during a trip to Paris where she took her first pottery classes and quickly turned over the pottery wheel to find her language freely forming clay with her hands.

She particularly values the therapeutic qualities in lending oneself to the object and process, favouring an intuitive and unmediated connection with clay over careful planning and the reliance on tools.

Hand-formed ceramic vase with petal-like details in hues of white, brown and blue by artist @jenneferhoffmann

The hydrangea vases feature irregular contours and surfaces, guiding the interaction between glaze and clay— each time bringing forth novel variations of colour and expression. Left with a raw base of overlapping slabs of clay.
