🪦🐈‍⬛👻🎃 31 Days of Halloween 🎃 👻🐈‍⬛🪦

Featured Book Review No. 2,184:
Soul Feeder (Demon Hunters No. 1)
Written by Jennifer Killick @jennifer.killick.56
Illustrated by Marina Vidal @marimbavidal
Published by Barrington Stoke on June 4, 2026
Recorded by Same
Listening Length: 1 hour and 16 minutes
Read by Thomas James Moran @_thomasmoran

Caiden and Sam are teenage friends earning some extra money by helping to move property out of a house. They notice strange things all over the place deciding that the owner must have been some kind of hunter having different kinds of weapons and unidentified animal heads on the walls. Before long they realize they are not alone and find themselves trapped inside with some kind of creature …unfortunately for them it is a soul-eating demon.

This book may seem too short at only 104-pages but that’s deliberately designed. Barrington Stoke publishes specialized, award-winning "hi-lo" (high-interest, low-reading-age) books designed specifically for children, teens, and reluctant readers with dyslexia, visual stress, or literacy difficulties.

The art was really good too!

Just some of my middle grade Halloween recommendations. I don’t particularly love Halloween but I do love a Halloween book. Apart from mysteries, spooky books are my favourite thing to read! I have so many on my TBR pile too..

Have you read any of these? 👻

Spooksmith Investigates, Shoe Creeper and The Soul Collector were previously sent AD/PR copies.

SERIAL CHILLERS: HORROR IN HAZARD! 🫣🫣🫣

I can’t wait to unleash Serial Chillers by @jennifer.killick.56 onto my class! They’ve loved her other books, never staying long on my class library shelf (or in our school library) and I know they’ll be queuing up for this one!

I’m a few chapters in and I know it’ll be another hit. Time to fully embrace spooky season and see where this next installment takes us. 🦾🤖

A couple of years ago I heard @frank_cottrellboyce on the radio, bemoaning the widespread lack of media coverage for children’s book authors. I didn’t know FCB very well at all, but in a fit of energised pique I messaged him “Would you like to do a podcast about children’s books with me?” He messaged back “Yes.” Then I remembered a nice radio producer I’d been in touch with called @mrgbird. I emailed him out of the blue and he also replied almost immediately, also with a “yes.” And the @islandofbrilliant was born.

Since then we’ve been so lucky to chat to some of the most brilliant and interesting people (pictured here!) Thank you if you’ve listened. And if you haven’t, you can now find every episode on YouTube. Hooray!

Our guests can confirm it’s a chaotic labour of love, but if nothing else we hope it amplifies some of the brilliant voices working in kids books today. Thank you to the wonderful Geoff Bird who keeps the show on the road and gives us his expertise for nowt. He is truly a marvel. And thank you also to @emilydrabs from @booktrust for championing new books every month.
Give us a listen if you fancy it x

PS it wouldn’t let me tag more than 20 people so apologies and please tag yourself if I’ve missed you! 🙏🏾

The Haunting of Old Splinter by Jack Mackay @jamackay_ 🔦👻

A properly scary book for reading under the covers with a torch as the nights draw in. I was meant to have an early night last night but I was up until the witching hour finishing it.

Spooky, gruesome and quite sad, with great writing that literally made me jump! How do you do jump scares in a book?? Suitable for UKS2 & KS3.

I'm excited to say that I won this and books in the Serial Chillers series by @jennifer.killick.56 and The Dead Yard series by PJ Kilburn @pardinawrites in a giveaway at an online @uksla session with the authors exploring the benefits of horror writing for children.

Horror is great for reading for pleasure, and it lets children experience fear in a safe space.

I'll be reading these books throughout October and I'll share my thoughts! 🎃
