☀️ From the Do Good Crew Newsletter, our Dear David story this week...
When @Jennlevi2016 (Jennifer Levi) talks about her son, Braun, she calls him their “ball of joy.” Braun was 18 and one of the country's top high school tennis players. He was also the kind of kid who always noticed the person standing in the corner. When the Palisades fire destroyed his family’s home, he organized beach volleyball games so his displaced friends could be together. At school, he started a lunchtime group where students who’d lost their homes could talk about what they were going through.
Five months later, Braun was killed by an alleged drunk driver while crossing the street with friends in Manhattan Beach.
Three days after that, Jennifer looked around a house full of people trying to help and thought, “No more flowers, no more food. Our son deserves more.” So she gathered her closest friends around the kitchen table and started @livelikebraunfoundation.
Today, the foundation helps students pay for college and trade school and supports public tennis centers like the ones Braun grew up on. Jennifer also visits schools and tells students exactly what happened to her son. She says she hasn’t made it through one talk without crying. But afterward, kids hug her and write to her. They tell her they spoke up or made a different choice because of what they heard.
Jennifer will tell you none of this has healed her. But it’s given her grief somewhere to go.
“The worst day of my life has turned into my life’s work.”
Braun spent his life looking for someone who needed him. Now his mom is doing the same. 💛

@jackjohnson was one of Braun’s favorite artists, and we were incredibly moved when Jack took the time to make this personal video for us. We felt his emotion deeply and it gave us a beautiful reminder of Braun.

Now he’s back at the @hollywoodbowl this Saturday and Sunday, and we’d love to fill the Bowl with Live Like Braun spirit on both nights!

Congratulations to the Levi family and Braun’s Law on this incredible milestone.

I never had the chance to meet Braun, but through the stories, the work, and the people who knew him, I feel like I’ve gotten to know his kindness and the kind of person he was.

On World Smile Day, it’s impossible not to think about Braun’s smile.

Braun could light up a room with that grin and those sparkly blue eyes. He would smile because he was genuinely happy to see you. Sometimes he would smile because he had something mischievous planned. And sometimes, honestly, a really good steak made him beam.

His smile made you feel loved, seen. Like the room had just gotten a little brighter.

Some of my favorite smiles were after tennis matches. He would win, throw off his cap and walk to the net smiling as he shook hands. And funny enough, even when he lost, he would still walk to the net with a smile.

That smile was magic.

We would do anything to see it one more time. So the best we can do now is make sure Braun’s legacy gives other people a reason to smile.

Smile at someone today. Make them feel seen. Bring a little light into a room – it can go a very long way.

We miss you, Braun.
We miss your smile.
We love you forever.

Oh my gosh. Maria Shriver is even more amazing than I thought she would be — which is tough because I have admired her for so long! What a soulful superstar with wisdom galore. There’s something exceedingly rare and special about her. And every time she spoke, we all hung on her every powerful word. What an honor to have had her interview me. Me! Crazy. Such an icon! Okay, I’ll stop… 😂

As a mom, I know we do everything we can to keep our kids safe, and how quickly someone else’s reckless decision can change a family forever.

With Jennifer Levi’s tireless advocacy and the Legislature’s work, the Governor signed Braun’s Law, and other measures strengthening California’s DUI laws to ensure safer communities.

I’m in awe of Jennifer’s strength and grateful she turned her love for Braun into lasting change.

Braun’s Law has been passed into law!

We are so proud of Mrs. Levi for fearlessly advocating for stronger DUI laws and safer communities. We are grateful she shared Braun's story and the LLB DUI Workshop at our Spring CAYC Virtual Conference. We also applaud Senator Archuleta for sponsoring the bill (SB 907).

We will continue to Live Like Braun and are so proud to see Braun’s legacy live on in California law!
