Meet our Studio Artist, Jenny Steele, ahead of Open Studios on Saturday 19 September.

Jenny Steele is a Scottish artist based at Rogue Artists’ Studios. Her practice draws on heritage weaving techniques to create tactile, evocative and joyful sculptures that explore themes of celebration, grief and ritual.

✨ Featured work: Wound and Woven Maypole (June 2026)
Commissioned by the Milton Keynes Council Culture Team for the Midsummer Festival and temporarily installed on Midsummer Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes.

Constructed from pine and marine ply, discarded ribbons and fabric from North West factories, handmade public tassels, willow, ribbon, trimming and yarn, the installation celebrates community, making and shared traditions.

📸 Image credits: Chris Henley and Milton Keynes Council. Thank you.

The final image shows Jenny with Charon, a woven sculpture created at Art Gene, Walney Island (2024).

Metamorphosis of Workwear Outfit 12/18

Walking Archive of a Future Textile Historian (2065) by Jenny Steele
The work coat is reminiscent of the aprons worn by female workers in spinning mills, and it has been produced using a variety of weaving techniques. It is inspired by the designs of Jean Elizabeth Gregson from the 1930s, the archive of whom is housed in the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. The wooden box, which contains ribbons and tassels, is modelled on archive boxes.

Festival Spotlight: Tassel Making with Jenny Steele

Tassel making is a form of passementerie, an endangered heritage craft that is used to create decorative trimmings for interiors, clothing and special occasions such as ceremonies. Using a range of brightly coloured sustainable cotton, silk and polyester yarns, you will create 1-2 wound tassels that you can take away to use on textiles, hang at home or attach to clothing.

All materials during the session are yarns and ribbons that have been sourced from a recycled yarn agent, who sources ex industrial yarn that has been collected from Northern textiles businesses and mills, saving the materials from landfill.

Tickets go live on goes live on Eventbrite on Friday 12th June. Learn more and explore the programme online now! 🔗

☀️ One week ago today, the sun was shining on Hardwick Hall and more than 1,000 people joined us for the Women Who Make Festival.

What a day.

From inspiring talks, walks and workshops to the incredible makers market and Dare to Dream Sewing Bee, the festival was filled with creativity, conversation and connection.

Together we explored themes of empowerment, belonging, identity, representation, care, support and respect - celebrating the many ways women shape culture, communities and creative futures.

A huge thank you to every artist, maker, artisan, facilitator, speaker, volunteer, partner and member of the Derbyshire Makes and Hardwick Hall team who made the day so special.

We’re already looking forward to the next Women Who Make Festival at Masson Mills on 10 October.

Visit the Derbyshire Makes website to find out more and book your place.
