I had a double-feature visit to NYC 🍎

My firstborn and his new wife have called this magical city home for a couple of years now. Which means I visit as often as I can.

When I travel, I make a point of getting to know the local birth professionals.

NYC has become a favorite.

A fun-filled MIL/DIL night out at The Rocky Horror Show. 👄 After worrying (briefly) that it might be a strange choice of show for a MIL/DIL night, we remembered we’re both goofballs at heart who love a Broadway show. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We loved it!

Lyrics lodged deep in my brain were unlocked. And the two of us smiled through the whole wacky, campy, playful, and well done show.

I’ll be back!

As to when…well, you’ll just have to shiver in antici……….pation! 😉

I often get asked what my favorite part of being a birth worker is and I can honestly say that after all these years it truly is community. Community has shaped so much of how I practice, who I choose to work with, how I educate and how I live my life.

It's an absolute honor, and I do believe a radical act, to support people in their reproductive journey. A huge part of that journey is the transformative experience of transitioning into parenthood. It is not one day of giving birth but rather a whole experience and shift in identity, in lifestyle, in what you want and need.

The demands and the rawness of parenting are a gift because they make us need one another. They make us crave belonging and support and community. They bring us back to our elders. They allow us to forgive and understand and grow and heal. They make us crave nature and nurturing and health. Needing one another gives us the ability to truly pursue and appreciate connection.

If you've been here a while you've seen my Mama Tried hat, which I made for myself as a reminder that I am doing my best. I fail in a hundred small ways daily and I also succeed in just as many. I gentle parent, but I also get reactive and repair. I truly believe the awareness of and effort towards breaking ancestral trauma patterns does make a difference, even though we remain imperfect.

Thank you to @jennyleighmayer and @magica1mamanyc for being part of the community that birth and birthwork has brought me into. I'm surrounded by so many thoughtful, powerful, nurturing families and goddamnit, we try. 🫶

We have a foster correspondent! 🎤

Thanks to @jennyleighmayer and family, Divine and her three beautiful kittens are set up in style, with expert care and attention from the whole family. To introduce them, Stella took the mic.

A few notes on kittens…

✨ If you encounter kittens outdoors, be sure to prioritize taking in their mama with them, to avoid separating them before they’re ready! Even if mama is feral, she should still come with them—you’ll just need to be TNR certified and follow best practices for caring for a feral cat indoors.
✨ Kittens need their mama until they are weaned, at least 6-8wks of age. If someone tries to give you a kitten before they are weaned, kindly share this info or offer to take mama with them until they are ready to be separated.
✨ Social bonds start young and are key to the healthy development of kittens. Kittens should have an age appropriate friend, whenever possible, to teach one another healthy ways of interacting with other cats. Always adopt kittens out to homes in pairs or to a home with another young, vetted kitten.

Meet the claymation trio 🎬

Coming indoors is a big shock for a cat born and raised on the streets. It’s surprisingly common for kittens from the same litter to come in at different paces of socialization, especially when they’re already 3-4 months old. But with the big snow coming and some wonderful fosters ready to step up, we knew we had to try!

These three are each setting their own pace as they enter foster homes:

Wallace, the sickliest of the three kittens, came around to pets in a matter of days, after decompressing post-trapping. We’ll have updates on him soon thanks to his foster @jennyleighmayer 💙

Shirley was the most shut down to start, and has turned into a little firecracker as she opens up in foster with @annaseigel in a socialization playpen. We’re focusing on playtime and treats to get her opening up 🩷

Our banana boy, Feathers, was the last to trap and has had the toughest time coming around. He is in need of a new foster who can share some patience and love with him while he acclimates indoors 💛

This year, we’re telling a different kind of Valentine’s story. From a Minnesota organizer, to a journalist navigating sweeping newsroom layoffs, to the founder of a foundation supporting young mothers, and to caregivers holding families together across distance and strain—we asked the same question: “Tell us one way that love showed up for you?”

The answers were intimate and specific: a friend who cleared out a refrigerator and brought what remained to a shelter before a cross-ocean move, mothers organizing to bring a teenager home from ICE detention, neighbors across Minnesota stretching to protect one another, a care worker laughing at a patient’s jokes and making her feel radiant, @jackblack being Jack Black.

Across different lives, the same thread ran through the stories—love showed up as time, as the ability to stay when things felt fragile.

In a moment when so much feels unsettled—economically, politically, and personally—that presence feels especially precious. These stories remind us how powerful it is when we’re able to show up for one another—and how much stronger our communities are when care is possible. Swipe to read.

As we reflect on this year's Unconference, Reclaiming Our Bodies: From Chaos to Collective Care, we love what Jen Mayer shared in our panel about caring for one another, not just individually, but on a local and hyperlocal level. Our speakers taught us about food resources and how to make an herbalism kit. They taught us to pause as a community with our sound bowls session, and they showed us how movement can bring us together.
