Semester 2 at @berkleecollege This was a tough semester for a few different reasons, but I’d argue it was even more important than my time in the fall. Again, I didn’t chronicle much, but it boiled down to this: Finally came to the decision as to what I was pursuing at Berklee. I’m double majoring Music Education and Performance. Continued meeting as many people as I could, and continued getting the privilege of calling them friends and acquaintances. Once again, I wish I had photos to put them all here. Got the chance to work with Billy Buss, whose mind moves a mile a minute the same way mine does, only with a level of grace and fluency I hope to eventually mimic; a great guide for trumpet, for piano, and for composing. It’s rare to find someone that can encompass that much, and I look forward to growing as a musician with him further. Joined, gigged, and recorded with @hrushka.music . Not my usual genre, not my usual expertise, but one of the biggest stepping stones I’ve planted my feet on, and a band that’s really accentuated everything about collaboration/compromise, saying more with less, and what can be accomplished through sheer determination. I look forward to continuing working with that group. Participated a lot more in other people’s projects, some of which involved people who I had met a while before Berklee itself. I received opportunities in a variety of ways, be it personal request, subbing, subbing for subs, or absolute luck when walking into the Wendy’s across from 150. The best ability is availability, and regardless of how well I think I played on those projects, I showed up and played. That has a lot more value to me now than it did during the semester. I don’t know if “shout-out” is the right word for this, but a big thank you to @jeremiah_732 for being a hardass. I needed it in every aspect of my life, regardless of if an instrument was in my hand or not. No matter how it seemed I took any word or sentence in person, know that it definitely affected and stuck with me. You’re someone I genuinely look up to in a variety of ways. I have chasms to grow, both in and out of music. Let’s see what progress I can make between now and Sem 3.

Semester 1 at @berkleecollege I don’t really chronicle much, I’d much rather experience an event than constantly have a phone or camera ready to capture whatever’s actually happening, but it boils down to this: Met a lot of great musicians and people that I’m happy to call friends and acquaintances, some of which are in this post. I wish I could name you all here. Jammed a bunch at Bebop’s, and met even more great people and players. Worked on more compositions, and even began arranging them. Got the chance to work with Tiger Okoshi, an insane musician and incredible guide. I don’t often feel strong playing trumpet, but he was able to help me progress so much as a player in such a short time. Got to meet and play with Victor Wooten and John Patitucci during a workshop, met Solomon Fox at a workshop, and met Terence Blanchard after a Herbie Hancock show. Started a group with @jacklutz_ , @jacob_gordonn , @tommyhegmusic , and @zidaansmusic_official that I hope to compose and arrange more for, and even perform with when the time and opportunity allows. Berklee is an environment that places everyone in a space that inspires each other to try harder, and after having to essentially reset a large portion of my trumpet playing ability, I’m forever glad to be at a school that I know without a doubt is going to send me in the right direction as an overall musician.
