Today we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Mr. Roger Brown—a gifted musician, arranger, educator, and mentor whose influence helped shape generations of musicians throughout Hampton Roads.

Mr. Brown’s legacy spans both Norfolk State University and Virginia State University, where his leadership, musical excellence, and commitment to students left a lasting mark. Beyond higher education, he continued inspiring audiences across the region through @rajazz10 , sharing his passion for music with countless communities.

The HBCU Alumni Fest family extends our deepest condolences to the Brown family, the Norfolk State University Spartan Legion, the Virginia State University Trojan Explosion, the entire RAJazz family, and everyone whose lives were enriched by his talent, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to music.

Rest in Paradise, Mr. Roger Brown.

Day Two: Alumni Fest — Norfolk State Homecoming 🏆💚💛

When we announced this year’s Alumni Fest, we started — and stopped — all Homecoming conversation.
When we announced it would be two days, we heard the faint breaths of other promoters gasping for air.
And when we announced @Ashanti and @Fabolous… all noise stopped. Silence.

As the organizers who built it brick by brick, all we could say was — “Breathe.”
Because we ain’t done.

This is the new normal for Norfolk State Homecoming:
Major venues. Major artists. Major experiences.
From here on out, nothing will be typical.

So if you were wondering about the price… or scrolling through Twitter with questions — this is why.
Because the experience has to be elevated.
Our alumni deserve more than thrown-together events made to serve egos established decades ago.

When you talk about legends, you have to mention @lyndentrail7 — one of the coldest to ever put on that Norfolk State uniform 🏈💚💛. A player who put up points on both sides of the field, whose grit, pride, and leadership embodied what it truly means to be a Spartan.

And the way he spoke in this video? It encapsulates the NSU experience — that unshakable pride, that family energy, that feeling that you can only get when you come home.

*Every single person in this set of photos has one piece of my heart. And they each know why. This love letter is for YALL! Thank you for comforting me, encouraging me, loving me, supporting me, HOLDING ME ACCOUNTABLE, the list goes on. I could NEVER repay your love 🫶🏾*

OKAY 😅 it took me forever to post this bc I couldn’t gather the words..I still don’t have them all but WE MOVE !

Every year, at the top of the year, I plan my trips home to Virginia and I make sure that no matter what my calendar looks like, I will always be in attendance @ Norfolk State University Homecoming. This year I wasn’t sure, but I’m so glad I came.

NSU has given me so much over the course of my life. I grew up in the 757, so NSU homecoming has BEEN a core memory for me. But as an adult, I appreciate it so much more. I live 700 miles from the 757, and I’ve been away for 10 years. Even still, Homecoming gives me that same excited feeling it gave me as a child. Knowing I’m coming home to genuine love, being able to see ALL my friends & family at ONE TIME, in ONE SETTING. The feeling is one of a kind.

I’ve made a huge name for myself as a photographer. I’ve been in rooms and photographed people and places that I’ve only dreamed of. & NSU gave me that. Aside from having a mentor & praying mom 🕊️, Norfolk State gave me my lifelong friends who would pour into me and see me through. These friends have loved me, comforted me, stood by me during my hardest season of losing my mom to cancer, & motivated me when I moved to Atlanta to pursue my career; and these SAME PEOPLE still love on me and support my business EVERY SINGLE HOMECOMING. They were here before MayaShotYou was a thing. NSU gave me these close pieces of my heart.

NSU is more than an “HBCU”. It is home for me, a safe place to just BE. I don’t know how I’d ever be able to show how much gratitude l feel. Just know the love is always real when you attend the 757’s biggest family reunion 🫶🏾
