🌿 Coming Soon to CAM — Human/Nature: Envisioning the Environment | On view February 26, 2026 – January 23, 2027 What does it mean to imagine the environment in our time—an era shaped by both awe and urgency? Human/Nature: Envisioning the Environment brings together seven artists whose works explore the intricate, often fragile relationship between people and the living world. Through installation, painting, photography, and mixed media, this exhibition invites reflection on how we see, shape, and share the planet we call home. Guest curated by Douglas Tewksbury, Ph.D. (@douglas.tewksbury), the exhibition asks us to look beyond crisis—to find hope, connection, and possibility in reimagining our place within nature itself. 🗓 Opening Reception: April 9, 2026 | 4:30–7 p.m. 📍 Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University Artwork: Alison Shields, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, (detail) Arctic Algae 3, 2025, oil on canvas #HumanNatureCAM #CastellaniArtMuseum #NiagaraUniversity #EnvironmentalArt #ArtExhibition #ContemporaryArt #NiagaraFallsArts #MuseumExhibition #ArtForChange

Today's photo dump slide deck was inspired by hands- starting with Katrina Bello, a visual artist whose work is informed by memory, reflections, observations and narratives of land and natural surroundings. So the rabbit hole began with a video still of Katrina's drawing we showed in Drawing Rooms @drawingrooms_jc 2019 group exhibit "Just Beneath the Surface", which was part of a series where she imagined a miniaturization of the oceans vastness into a size that could be intimately contained in the palm of her daughters hands. The work reminds us of how big the world is, but that what's important can be kept close to one's heart. Michelangelo, an obvious choice, followed, and then a piece by Jeri Coppola, also in that same DR exhibition, Cave paintings, Stieglitz' well-known photo of Georgia O'Keeffe's hands, Escher, da Vinci, a few artists new to me, ancient votive hands and finally, and an image from an archival book on palmistry. Hands are a common symbol used by Artists across millennia to tell a unique story, without words. What strikes me most is how the use of this image can convey a sensitive and wide range of characteristics, as well as emotions, by acting as a personal metaphor to the Artist and/or their subject's inner state. A few Artists layered in an element of mysticism, which I also find interesting, as we use our hands to make art which can be considered the result of, or an act of magic. 1.
