In this episode, world-renowned soprano superstar and Arts & Health advocate Renée Fleming opens up about her spiritual relationship to her performances and her creative process, some of the iconic heroine roles she has played, the historical and contemporary uses of the word diva, the power of women’s narratives and joined voices in opera, her lifelong love of reading, and her key mentors — including opera legend Leontyne Price. She also shares her recent work in music, science, and health, as well as fascinating insights into her latest album — The Fiddle and the Drum — which was created with banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck and features many luminaries, including Dolly Parton. Fleming also talks about awe, kindness, and love, and she speaks to the horizons that she envisions for the arts and a return to greater human connection.

Renée Fleming is a five-time Grammy award winner who is internationally celebrated for her vocal and dramatic artistry, as well as her dedicated advocacy for the impacts of the creative arts in health. A 2023 Kennedy Center Honoree and winner of the US National Medal of Arts, she has sung for momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Super Bowl. Renée’s new album, The Fiddle and the Drum, with Grammy-winning banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, and guest appearances by Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Aoife O’Donovan, and Jerry Douglas, celebrates Appalachian bluegrass and folk music. Last winter, she returned to the Paris Opera with her acclaimed portrayal of Pat Nixon in Nixon in China, which she is bringing to the Washington National Opera next month. […] www.reneefleming.com

It's a beautiful Tuesday for a drive through the country 😃🍂🍁🌻🐄🦌🪶☀️🛻
And this album should be blasting out of your CD player as you go! 😊 I've had it for ages, but never on vinyl until a couple of weeks ago. It's gorgeous and sounds amazing. With an all-star lineup, this is a must have for your collection. 🤎🧡

This twang is next level 🪕

Artist: The New South
Album: The New South
Year: 1975
Label: Rounder
Producer(s): J.D. Crowe

Fun facts:
- Fans of the album and musicians often call it by its record label catalog number, Rounder 0044, instead of its self-titled name.

- Before recording the album, the quintet honed their sound by playing 5 nights a week at the Sheraton Inn in Lexington, Kentucky.

- 4 of the 5 members of the band (J.D. Crowe, @rickyskaggs, @jerrydouglas, Tony Rice) have been inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as individual artists.
