Printed laboratory. We had the honor of collaborating with @jerryketel on some spreads for this issue. I assigned him a five page sequence which included two interviews — the first was with Mark Leyner by W. Scott Howard. Jerry worked with Christine Cody to concept a photoshoot for the opening spread. The second interview was with the noise rock group Cop Shoot Cop, which disbanded in 1996. Jerry’s wanted to run the interview on two sides of a single page, drilling holes in the page. We loved the concept, but needed to find out how much it would cost. Plazm magazine was really on a shoestring budget. It had been three years since we started and we couldn’t pay ourselves — if we were lucky we’d sell enough ads to cover the printing bill. It took us many years to figure out that the magazine would never actually make money. All of the design contributions were volunteer, really it was a way to collaborate with people we admired and who wanted to participate in our crazy experimental media laboratory. The holes would cost $700 and we had to tell Jerry we couldn’t afford to do it. Not only did he graciously design the spreads, introduce us to Christine (who later photographed my wedding), but he also paid for the holes! 🕳🕳🕳 Center spread by Jacque Flechemuller @flechemuller — we were able to separate the work into a duotone to work with our production and budget limitations. The issue also featured an interview with Bianca Jagger by Jane Kinney, reporting on Guarani suicides in the rainforest. This was Jane’s first of multiple reporting contributions to the magazine. A lighter interview with musician Pete Krebbs of Hazel by Pete McCracken was included, designed by Kat Saito. Back cover by Yuji Hiratsuka
