This week, I had the opportunity to attend my first session of the 2026 Women in Motion Mentoring Program, and it was a great start!

We were intentionally seated with women we didn’t know, which gave us the opportunity to connect with women from different backgrounds and experiences.

Our facilitator, Jesica Averhart, was PHENOMENAL! She had a way of pulling us out of our comfort zones while dropping so many golden nuggets along the way. One of the exercises that stood out to me was identifying our core values and really taking a look at what matters to us and why.

And to think, this was only our FIRST session! I walked away with so many takeaways, and it has me looking forward to what the next sessions will bring. We are just getting started!

🎒✨ Since everyone is sharing their “First Day of School” pictures… well, apparently I’m headed back to class too! 😂📚

Except my classroom for the next two days looks a little different. 😉

I’m spending August 27–28 at the beautiful Graylyn Estate for my FIRST Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Carolinas Conference — learning, connecting, networking, and hopefully coming home with a notebook FULL of ideas. 🙌

And if Jes Averhart is even an inkling of how these two days are going to go… 👏🙌👏🙌 I am HERE. FOR. IT.

One thing I’ve learned after decades in the events and hospitality industry is that experience does not mean you’ve finished learning. If anything, the longer I’m in this industry, the more I realize how important it is to intentionally step OUT of the office and put myself in rooms where I can grow.

Because professional development isn't just about collecting another certification or sitting through another presentation.

✨ It’s hearing a perspective you hadn’t considered.
✨ It’s meeting someone who challenges the way you’ve always done something.
✨ It’s exchanging ideas with people who understand this crazy industry.
✨ It’s building relationships BEFORE you need them.
✨ And sometimes, it’s simply getting away from your computer long enough to feel inspired again.

Our industry is constantly evolving. Guest expectations change. Technology changes. Trends change. Business changes. If we want to continue creating extraordinary experiences for our clients, we have to continue investing in the person behind those experiences, too.

So today, I’m not the professor. I’m not the planner. I’m not the one teaching the workshop.
I’m the student. 📚💜

And I’m ridiculously excited to learn, network, ask questions, meet new people, and bring some fresh inspiration back to KYAE.

Here’s to never becoming so experienced that we stop being teachable. 🙌

First day of school: Event Professional Edition. 😂🎒

This one flew in to close a contract …. @jesaverhart 20 years later and somehow we still end up at dinner talking for hours about life, business, motherhood, faith, success, and the evolution of who we’ve become. 🥹✨

What started with Jesica working alongside me on “The Triangle Catalyst” magazine grew into one of the most genuine friendships God could’ve given me.

To sit across from someone who has truly seen every version of you… the dreaming phase, the building phase, the healing phase, and now the glow up phase… is priceless.

And whew… watching our children grow into grown people 😩taller than us, graduate college, and become their own people while we continue aging gracefully and leveling up? Beautiful. 🤍

Cheers to us turning 50 months apart, still evolving, still glowing, still pushing each other, and still protecting the vault conversations. 😂🥂

I love you Jesica. Forever grateful for the journey. ✨

It was an afternoon of great conversation as the latest installment of NCAJ's NEXT STEPS Leadership Series focused on the art of collective leadership. How does a leader make decisions that advance the broader mission of the organization while holding onto personal convictions? We are, as ever, grateful for the sponsors who help make the NEXT programs possible: Settlement Planning Services, @forgeconsultingllc Companies and @marrickmedical.
