The series follows the rise of the real-life Norse raider Erik Bloodaxe (played by Xavier Molyneux) his formidable wife, Gunnhild, (played by Jessica Madsen) And his brother Haakon, (played by Levi Miller). The duo fights to claim the throne of Norway amidst betrayals, shifting loyalties, and rival factions.

Thank you so much to @primevideo for inviting me out with my boyfriend @collectiblesinsider to experience this new series in such a special way 🙏🏻 We CANNOT wait for the rest!!

THE VIKING SAGA IS FAR FROM OVER. ⚔️🩸

For those who thought the world of Vikings was behind us, get ready to return to the brutal world of Norse kings, bloody rivalries, ancient beliefs, and battles for power. BLOODAXE is coming to Prime Video on January 20, 2027, and there are some major reasons for Vikings fans to be excited.

Created, written, and executive produced by Michael Hirst, the mastermind behind Vikings (2013), alongside his son Horatio Hirst, this new historical drama takes us into the turbulent 10th century, following the rise of one of Scandinavia’s most infamous Viking warriors: Erik Bloodaxe. @amazonmgmstudios @primevideo

🩸 WHAT IS BLOODAXE ABOUT?

The story follows Erik Bloodaxe and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, known to history as the Mother of Kings. As King Harald Fairhair’s health begins to decline, the future of Norway hangs in the balance. Erik must fight against his own brothers and rival claimants to secure the throne, while shifting alliances, family rivalries, political ambition, and betrayal threaten to tear the kingdom apart. @xavier.molyneux @jess_mads

But this is more than a story about a crown. The conflict also reflects a changing Viking world, where traditional Norse beliefs collide with the growing influence of Christianity. With legendary figures such as Egil Skallagrimsson entering the picture, the struggle for power promises to be as dangerous as it is unpredictable.

⚔️ IS BLOODAXE CONNECTED TO VIKINGS (2013)?

Here’s the detail that makes this project especially interesting: Michael Hirst is returning to the world of Viking storytelling. He wrote all 89 episodes of the original Vikings and is now building a completely new saga with Horatio Hirst.

However, Bloodaxe is not a direct sequel to Vikings, nor is it a continuation of Vikings: Valhalla. It tells its own story, with a new cast and a different central conflict. Its setting falls roughly 100 years after the events of Vikings and 70 years before Vikings: Valhalla, placing it in a fascinating period of Norse history.

There is also a historical connection worth noting: Harald Fairhair, played by Peter Franzé
