Part of Do It Together: Phase II
Pallas Projects/Studios 1996-2026

Drawing on Pallas’ long-running and ongoing advocacy, research and publishing on artist-run practices, the programme draws on, reflects and responds to the legacy and impact of artist-run antecedents including Gordon Matta-Clark, a pioneer of 112 Greene Street – one of New York's first alternative, artist-run venues, and co-founder of the artist-run restaurant Food.

Splitting (1974) documents Matta-Clark's dissection of a suburban house in Englewood, New Jersey, which he bisected with two parallel cuts and then tilted one half of the structure at an angle.

Conical Intersect (1975) records Matta-Clark's intervention in two seventeenth-century buildings adjacent to the site of the future Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Day's End (1975) documents one of Matta-Clark's most ambitious and controversial projects: a series of cuts made over two months in an abandoned pier on New York's Hudson River.

Opening tonight at Printed Matter in NYC “New Openings Against Old Surfaces: On Gordon Matta-Clark’s Walls Paper” ✨✨✨ 6pm tonight 9/9 Estate Director Jessamyn Fiore has a public conversation with Frances Richard, incredibly talented author of Gordon Matta-Clark: Physical Poetics✨✨✨ Tomorrow 9/10 there is a public reception from 6-8pm with remarks by Jessamyn ✨✨✨ See link for details in bio ✨✨✨ Exhibition runs until November 29th so go check it out✨✨✨ We have been working with PM on this incredible (and totally unique!) exhibition for 2 years and so delighted it’s finally here✨✨✨ Huge thank you to Keith Gray and Hannah Marshall for their incredible work putting it all together - you have both been an absolute pleasure to work with ✨✨✨ From @printedmatterinc Press Release: Printed Matter is pleased to present New Openings Against Old Surfaces: On Gordon Matta-Clark’s Walls Paper, the first exhibition focused specifically on the publishing output of pioneering artist Gordon Matta-Clark, with a particular focus on his project Walls Paper. The show offers an in-depth consideration of the 1973 publication, situating the work as a key experiment within the artist’s diverse and ambitious practice, and with the artists’ book medium at large. The exhibition is organized with the participation of the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark, with materials drawn from its archives, and the Gordon Matta-Clark collection at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal. On occasion of the exhibition, Printed Matter will realize two newly-created commissions from contemporary artists in dialogue with the legacy of Matta-Clark.✨✨✨
New Openings Against Old Surfaces is presented as part of Printed Matter’s 50th Anniversary programming, connecting the artist’s experimentation in book form to the radical milieu that characterized the time of PM’s founding—and with contemporary artists’ practice today.✨✨✨

My mother and I are heartbroken to learn about the death of Lucien Smith. He first reached out in 2023 about his idea to open a new Food restaurant inspired by the original Food in SoHo founded by Gordon Matta-Clark and Carol Goodden with Tina Girouard. He wanted to extend his nonprofit work with Serving the People into this new Food - building community for the downtown arts community today. In our conversations, we were always impressed with how he was channeling Gordon’s ideas and work through his own unique creative vision and style - he was so respectful of Gordon’s legacy and the meaning of Food, always. And my lord he so full of energy and ideas, humor and enthusiasm! It was such a privilege to support his project and vision, to celebrate the inspiration of GMC on a younger generation and see this spirit of creative community exist today. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. It’s an unbelievable loss 💔 Thank you Lucien for all your creativity, love and spirit - we will miss you deeply ❤️ First image from @cultured_mag and the rest from my first dinner at Food including a gift of GMC at Food photo for Lucien 🕊️❤️

MoCA Montecatini Terme Italy through April 2027

An Immersive Journey Through Thematic Sections

The exhibition is organized into several sections, each designed to immerse the visitor in the settings and atmospheres that shaped urban writing.

A central focus is dedicated to the origins of writing in New York during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Featured here are accounts and works by true pioneers—such as TAKI 183, JEC*, SJK 171, MIKE 171, RIFF 170, SNAKE 1, STAY HIGH 149, and COCO 144—as well as iconic figures like QUIK, IZ The WIZ, LADY PINK, TOXIC, DELTA 2, SAR, and ZEPHYR. A breathtaking set design, created by papier-mâché master Jacopo Allegrucci, will recreate the visual impact of the New York subway, bringing the original context of this artistic revolution back to life.

From Prehistoric Caves to the Walls of New York: An Unbroken Thread of Expression

The exhibition’s central concept is bold and revolutionary: public art is not a modern phenomenon but is rooted in an ancestral human need to “leave a mark.” From cave paintings to the rock carvings of Val Camonica, and from the graffiti of ancient Pompeii to the inscriptions found in today’s metropolises, the act of communicating visually within shared space transcends eras and cultures.

Christine DeFazio Arts had the pleasure of consulting on this important exhibition.

On June 23rd, we presented Short Term Eternity at Palais de Tokyo.

The collection and runway show are deeply rooted in who we are, what we stand for, and embody a hopeful gesture toward the future.

Thank you to our team and to all the collaborators who helped bring this project to life.

We were also delighted to have @pauavia style the show, @prsseau create a powerful soundtrack, and @david_douard conceive a site-specific installation for this unique occasion.

A special thank you to Jessamyn Fiore @gordonmattaclark_estate for your trust, enthusiasm, and the inspiring creative conversations.
