18 1/2yr old J trying to figure out the new GRAVE single “SPEED DEMON”, my how their sound changed by then. Everyone knew by ‘93 this beautiful period that was OURS was starting its inevitable, decline. The best to do it said “some music was meant to stay underground”…so there ya go🤣 a very good friend sent over a bunch of pics last night and the memories came flooding in. There were 5 of us + the gf. We were Lost Boys tight(watch the film) and the ultimate dream, in my young, oblivious mind was to have us in a band, why not right? Not just any band but the mighty NEFARION!!! No, there isn’t any live footage, unless you have VHS, proper recordings, or famous photographs involved so you’ll just have to take our word. We were the best band in the gotdamn world😈 Well I could only talk 1 into the calling. We found an incredible guitarist who could shred, yet beautifully constructed passages that made us feel alive and a drummer that to this day, had the most original, yet maddening drumming style I’d seen. Pure Keith Moon, if Keith had found Death Metal🤣and for about 3 years we were the best band on the planet, no one could tell us different. Time has its way with young creatives and ultimately we ended up in the Brian Adams song Charley quit Joey got married Should’ve known we’d never get far… The gf found true love with my best friend so the story does have a happy ending🤣we still talk, not as much as I’d like, but that’s life. There’s not much to change looking back, because all those years in the woodshed, makeshift rehearsal rooms and parents garages (we got summoned to the courthouse on that one, I’ll leave it for the book-small town living) molded us into a force. Day 15 : Aye Girl I met @jesse_r_leach on Tinder. Our first date was at a Thai restaurant and we absolutely had stronger homie vibes than date vibes. Our second date we went back to his house, went to his bedroom and made music (AND ONLY MUSIC) for 3 hours. We became really good friends and collaborators after that. I had some lyrics for a song called Aye Girl that I did not have a beat for yet (a little ditty about being cat called and hating it) and sang it to Jesse. He whipped up a beat for it that day! He is so talented! I wanted to make a video for the song, which is also my first stab at music video direction (I co-directed it with @srcaino and shot by @unclemaxieboy ) The concept was a Freaky Friday situation where the main character(Jesse) woke up and was being objectified. I had some pals (@christinecornellmusic @lia_new_new and Haley @lacorexicana Hannah) show up to my apartment in Brooklyn and we walked around the hood shooting things guerilla style. I found a really cheap studio in Bushwick that was $30 an hour for us to shoot the club scene in, and it was so small, making it hard to figure out how to get the camera and the cast in there — but we made it work! This video was one of the first mainstream press I ever got. I am not sure how this happened, but somehow Time magazine picked it up and wrote a cute little article on it.
