Located on the Front Lawn and outdoors for the first time, 𝘛𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 was conceived as part of Viviana Paredes’ ongoing investigation of the maguey (agave) plant and its many medicinal and utilitarian uses by indigenous peoples throughout the Americas, particularly in rural Mexico. Since ancient times, this plant has been used for food, medicine, shelter, building material, and ritualistic piercing. Today, many of these ancient practices have been abandoned in the face of increasing commercial demand for tequila and mezcal.

Made of recycled Patrón bottles, 𝘛𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 exists at the intersection of cultural and environmental issues, and the effect on indigenous populations throughout the world. Using the language of contemporary art, Paredes creates a surprising (but also apt) visual representation of the maguey plant’s role in providing shelter and building material. Her use of glass is deliberate, offering a pointed commentary on the rise and popularity of American tequila consumption as evidenced by how easily she collected the 989 empty bottles needed to create the work. She notes with irony that although tequila is the national drink of Mexico, the American-owned tequila company chose the name Patrón, a word that translates in Spanish to “boss or master.”

This work is on view at Montalvo until Nov 8 as part of our 2026 Marcus Exhibition, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 & 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦. Open daily from 8am-sunset, the Cottage Gallery is open Thurs-Sun, 11am-3pm, or by appointment.

And congratulations to Viviana on the opening of her solo exhibition, 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘜𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴, at MACLA this Friday! The immersive, multi-sensory installation expands her practice with suspended glass, sound, and video projection created in collaboration with LAP Fellow Jesse Gilbert, whose collaboration began during their overlapping residencies last February. The opening will be part of this month’s First Friday from 5-8pm

We invite you to PHASE SHIFT, an evening of live generative environments. A story told in phases.
Drop in any time. Stay as long as you like.
Built in TouchDesigner. The community is warmly invited.

More info and tickets at link in bio >

ABOUT
Life moves in phases. An experimental narrative told through human-computer interaction. Computer vision, generative and performed audio visual. Human designed and controlled. Synchronized techno, dub and ambisonics.

An experiment in live generative environments, and an early look at a longer-term toolset Jarrett from
Derivative has been building for real-time AV performance.

UNDER THE HOOD, THE PIPELINE
TouchDesigner at the core, but this project has really been about stress-testing POPs — TouchDesigner’s new Point Operator family — alongside ML tooling we’ve been pushing past the experimental stage. Real-time generative visuals driven by computer vision, with human interaction in the loop throughout. Nothing is pre-rendered. The system was designed to be performed and steered live.

AUDIO
Running on a Dante network: a quad-channel main room and a new experimental ambisonics room for fully spatialized listening. Synchronized electronic music locked to TouchDesigner via some novel sync techniques we’ve been developing.

Why “phases”? The piece is loosely structured as a narrative arc — life in stages — but each stage is a different configuration of the ML, visual, and audio systems. The technical state of the rig is the storytelling.

This is a tuning night and a technical exercise as much as a show. Things will be weird in interesting ways. Come see what works, have a drink, and meet others from the community.

This past weekend marked the celebration of Emergence, a live art exhibit produced & presented by the @fathomers with Afro Rithm Futures Group, co-founded by Ahmed Best and Dr. Lonny. The project brought together an inspiring mix of collaborators: choreographers, artist and synthetic biologists to create a multidisciplinary experience that bridges the worlds of performance art and science.

The exhibit has since been immortalized as part of a 10-volume catalogue . A stunning collection that now preserves this creative milestone in print. The event was also a community moment, drawing together friends and supporters who showed up to celebrate the intersection of Afro-diasporic culture, movement, and biological science.

⭕️Emergence stands as a testament to what becomes possible when art and science are allowed to inform and inspire each other.

Much ink and many pixels have been devoted over the past few decades to the “death of privacy,” but the quantum cliff will be something else entirely. As quantum computers become powerful enough to decrypt most of the documents and communications that have relied on security protocols for decades—including intimate chats, medical records, banking credentials, and state secrets—the death of secrecy may be imminent.

To break down this coming cataclysm, we got the authors of THE SECRET LIFE OF DATA from @mitpress, Aram Sinnreich (@booksandbass) and Jesse Gilbert (@jessegilbert), to explain the stakes and sketch a way through, if not out.

Armed with smartwatches, home internet appliances, and an endless supply of apps, games, and streaming services, billions of us now spend our days and nights enmeshed in webs of digital sensors, machine learning algorithms, and overlapping information networks, all designed to reduce the minutiae of our lives into discrete data. As governments and corporations grasp at this data for various purposes, Aram Sinnreich and Jesse Gilbert's book "The Secret Life of Data" offers a kaleidoscopic view of the industries and technologies that collect, mine, churn, and trade our data, and what to do about them.

This book—winner of the 2025 Association of Internet Researchers Nancy Baym Annual Book Award—demonstrates how readers can play an active part in shaping how digital technology influences their lives and the world at large. Learn more at the link in our bio. @aior_ig

Really proud of some of the work I’ve been lucky enough to be part of over the past year - delayed reposting a few highlights on my feed. So… 🔁 Kicking things off with these teaser videos I created + edited for Roland’s TR-1000 launch last year — released in the lead-up to the campaign to give little glimpses of what was coming. All 4 x in a row here.

Sound + music by @recloose and Dustin Good. The visuals were real-time generative imagery, driven by sound, created by @jessegilbert and featuring the incredible artists we filmed for the launch campaign, featuring @kuniyuki_takahashi_music, @thegyptianlover, and @kaitlynaurelia.

Massive shout out to the entire amazing @rolandglobal creative team and to director @achaloff. 🙌🏼

🔁 Repost collated from Roland’s global channels.
