Four years of disappointing @kyle_henmi2 with my weight choice.

Best 12 hour party of the year.

September was a lot.

some big things ended and I said goodbye when I never thought I would, but there were a lot of new beginnings too. I met a bunch of my work homies in person for the first time and bonded way more than I expected. I cried from laughing & also from pain, sometimes in the same day lol. somehow I’m doing fine, some days even thrivin’. just don’t ask me how, I’m still figuring that out.

Nostalgic, not sad. October, be nice. 🫶🏽

I wouldn’t call myself a rabid sports fan, but Pawn Shop could make me one. Most of my athletic attention is dedicated to March Madness, and now I have the perfect place to fill my belly and bust my bracket: Chef Tony Messina’s sprawling, boisterous new project, Pawn Shop (5901 Melrose Ave.)

A recent Eater article by Mona Holmes dives deep into dinner service, so I was excited to make my first visit during brunch.

And baby, we BRUNCHED.

I didn’t expect to walk into a fully packed restaurant at noon on a Sunday, but then again, I didn’t expect almost 60 televisions, either. I didn’t expect the private rooms available for rent at a nominal fee. And although I’m familiar with what Messina is capable of in the kitchen, I damn sure wasn’t expecting to be sitting on my couch a full day later wishing I had another plate of his Spam fried rice.

Housemade Spam, that is, which is less salty than its commercial counterpart, and even more satisfying. The perfectly oozy egg on top breaks open at the slightest nudge, sending its molten gold creeping between the grains for a silky, sublime breakfast.

A six-pack of crispy, excellently seasoned wings with a side of habit-forming charred chile sauce (also available in lemon pepper and buffalo) deserves a cheering section of its own. And the fresh, vibrant shaved broccoli Caesar, snow-capped with a blizzard of Parmesan and a small school of boquerones, was a surprising favorite. As a fan of thoughtful textures, the prawn and avocado toast with cotija, pickled onions, and almonds is a home run. Similarly, the crunchy Brioche French toast lands on the table like a set of wheel chocks: thickly sliced wedges of fluffy-as-hell brioche served with a trio of sweet and savory toppings offer game-winning textures of their own.

The cocktail list is tightly organized and includes sporty riffs on Old Fashioneds, Negronis, and Palomas, and many of Pawn Shop’s house selections can be made sans alcohol. Of course, copious amounts of beer and wine are available, too.

Street parking and valet are available.

Thanks for a great afternoon, Pawn Shop. I’ll be back soon for dinner.

don’t befriend your coworkers. don’t hang out with your coworkers. definitely don’t do heart hands or bond with coworkers you’ve only ever seen in a tiny Teams box.

blah blah blah. don’t tell me what to do. 🙂‍↔️

part 1… obvi.

My heart is frequently broken by the lack of usefulness in health-focused education.

I, like many of you, have spent thousands of dollars, hours, and years trying to demystify, improve, or fix my health.

Which leads me to wonder: who is supposed to teach us how to do this whole “health” thing correctly?

Living healthfully in a body designed to deteriorate is a SKILL. And skills are meant to be taught.

You know who’s not particularly good at teaching people how to be healthy?

Public education.
Healthcare.
The Wellness Industry.

Hop into any doctor’s office and you’ll hear: “Get 7–9 hours of sleep and exercise regularly.”

Open Instagram or TikTok and you’ll find endless advice about lowering biological age, strength training, supplements, and everything else you supposedly need to do, buy, track, or prep.

TO WHICH I ASK: Where have we arrived as a result of all these directives?

Because I don’t see very many people improving their health in ways that are both productive and sustainable.

It’s not that all health advice is wrong or nefarious.

We have good information.

What we lack is a process for actually integrating it into our lives.

As far as I can tell, most people who are successful at improving their long-term wellbeing have either been raised around a health-focused lifestyle or had to purposefully construct four conditions:

Commitment: A flexible but unwavering dedication to something specific.

Competence: A curious, beginner’s mind-- willing to learn the information and skills necessary to carry it out.

Consistency: Imperfect but regular action in service of the commitment.

Community: Like-minded or affirming support from the people around you.

These Four Conditions have an outcome: Confidence.

And this confidence translates into something that looks a lot like health—being capable of carrying out the functions of our day while feeling generally positive about who we are, what we’re doing, and how we look.

If you’d like to commit to an activity with a COMMUNITY that’s dedicated to consistently teaching competence and building confidence in its students… look no further than Lift Run Hang on Oct. 3
