Starting off the week with some pics from inside the "Michel", which is the nickname of the St. Michaeliskirche, one of the main churches of Hamburg and one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Germany ⛪️

The first church of St. Michaelis was completed in 1685, after the Reformation. It was not only the newest and the largest, but also the first Evangelical Lutheran church without a Catholic past. Half a century later, in 1750, the church was struck by lightning and burned down.
This was not taken as a bad omen and a decade later, a new, baroque church was built in its place. In 1906 another fire, this time caused by a blow lamp in the wood tower, completely destroyed the building.
Between 1906 and 1912 a third church was built using the old plans but, this time, reinforcing the construction with steel and concrete. Just 30 years later severe damages were caused by air raids during the Second World War. Again, St. Michaelis persevered. The church was reconsecrated in 1952 and has since undergone complete restoration.

The interior is completely decorated in white and gold and features one of the biggest organs of the German-speaking area. Organ concerts of great quality are regularly held here.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to follow the beginnings of the Beatles in Hamburg, thanks to a great tour by the wonderful @stefaniehempel, who showed us with her ukulele, some old photos and many great fun and interesting stories and anecdotes, where John, Paul and George first met Ringo, where they first played as a band and where they lived during their time in Hamburg before conquering the world shortly after with their music 🎶

The band members, aged 17 to 19, arrived in Hamburg in August 1960 and stayed in the city for over 2 years, performing in various clubs in Hamburg’s red-light, bar and entertainment district, Reeperbahn. They played long, grueling hours – six to eight hours a night, seven days a week – and stayed active by taking Preludin, an appetite-suppressing stimulant drug. They were living in the back of the Bambi Kino, a run-down old cinema. At the “Top Ten Club” (now the Mondoo Club), they had their longest run of performances with 92 consecutive nights! By the end of 1962, the band had also become famous in their hometown of Liverpool and their first hits on the radio followed. It didn’t take long for Beatlemania to take the world by storm and the rest is history.

John Lennon later said about their time in Hamburg: “I might have been born in Liverpool - but I grew up in Hamburg”. George Harrison had positive memories of the period: “I’d have to say with hindsight that Hamburg bordered on the best of Beatles times. We didn’t have any luxury, we didn’t have any bathrooms or any clothes, we were pretty grubby, we couldn’t afford anything, but on the other hand we weren’t yet famous, so we didn’t have to contend with the bullshit that comes with fame.” Paul McCartney was philosophical: “Hamburg was certainly a great childhood memory. But I think all things are enhanced by time. It was very exciting, though I think it felt better to me a little later in our career, once we’d started to get a bit of success with the records.”

Some impressions of the @vogelball 🐦👨🏼‍🎤🎶

The @vogelball takes place after the #pride parade in Hamburg, and is not only a one-day open air rave in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg - but also a place of visibility for the local #queer scene. The queer glittering feather spectacle is one of the few events in Hamburg where international queer acts can also be experienced. The event and the corresponding communication channels also draw attention to queer issues 🌈

Organic vs diagonals 》Finding fresh angles in this stunning designed office building 🥰⠀
⠀
ℹ️ Behörde für Stadtentwicklung und Umwelt (BSU) designed by @sauerbruchhutton and completed in 2013.⠀
⠀
The building’s concept is structured in seven separate ‘houses’. These houses are connected via an access ‘road’ that has its own open staircase atrium which enhances easy orientation, efficient vertical access, good distribution of natural light into interior spaces, and natural cross-ventilation.⠀
⠀
♻️ It also uses renewable resources like natural lighting, natural cross-ventilation, and sun-powered heating.⠀

🎊Happy 5th Anniversary @elbphilharmonie 🎊

I can't believe it has been 2 weeks since we celebrated this already iconic building in Germany.
Designed by @herzogdemeuron the @elbphilharmonie has become the new cultural and touristic center of Hamburg.
Here is a selection of photos of the exterior of the building. Let me know which is your favorite. 😊

Thanks to @hamburgahoi for the invitation and making this visit possible, @westinhamburg for the stunning room and @anlinsh for the organization. I enjoyed every minute of my stay in Hamburg. 🙏

✨Created to shine and sparkle ✨ This spot was on my wish-list for so long. So happy @hamburgahoi & @elbphilharmonie made it possible to visit this iconic rooftop. 🙏🏻

ℹ️ 5,800 white-coated, round, perforated aluminum plates, called sequins are covering the 7,000-square metre roof of the Elbphilharmonie.

The undulating sweep of the roof rises from the lower eastern end to its full height of 108 metres at the Kaispitze (the tip of the peninsula).
The sequins have a diameter of up to 110 centimeters and...
serve no purpose other than for the eye.

Gotta love design features like that.

🤓Fun fact: The shape of the roof resemble the waves you can find in the harbor ⚓

✏️ Design by @herzogdemeuron and completed in 2016.

#️⃣Easily one of my favorite additions to my city-guide you can find via #marcorama_in_hamburg

👉🏻 Don't forget to check out the tagged accounts, they made this weekend an unforgettable, fun and creative weekend. Still amazed by all the different way we show our love for architecture.

Enjoy your Tuesday! 🙋🏻‍♂️
