Not long until September 10th... pre orders open, and if you DM me I'll add you to my launch day "pre orderer treats" email.

@jesussotes (www.jesussotes.com) was commissioned to create a mysterious atmosphere for the book, and set piece illustrations were briefed for various chapters and exercises, with some stimulus imagery.
From there, the project took on a life of its own and he created a less "obvious" and conventional presentation of mystery and intuition.

His process is to work through the initial stages by hand and then move on to the later phases using digital tools, and, like many things, it is during these final stages, that he describes often realizing that what he's have done so far isn't quite working; that is when—on the fly—he would discover solutions that truly satisfy and excite him (this is the point of "immersion").

This is one of my favourite images from the book and accompanies the intuitive tarot reading guidance.
I have included exercises to enhance or reveal your own "clair" abilities. This is a book you TRY vs just read...

This Book Will Make You Psychic launches worldwide 🌐 September 10th.

Going to see The Odyssey this weekend? You need to check out Pandora's Box 🏺

ad/gifted for review from @thamesandhudson via @ukbg_review_circle

👥 2-5 players
⏳️ 20 minutes
⚙️ Light complexity

➡️ Swipe for an overview of the gameplay

Comparable to games like Love Letter, it's a simple concept where you're trying to manage a hand of cards to eventually eliminate the other players through light deduction and take that mechanics 👊

We love the illustrations by @jesussotes – they really bring the Greek mythology theme to life!

Its small box makes it perfect for beach days and holidays, and the gameplay is accessible enough for anyone to pick up and play

The nature of these types of games makes them quite a bit more enjoyable at a higher player count, but it still works at two players and you can house rule playing a max of one card per turn instead of multiple if you want to extend the playtime

In comparison to Love Letter, there's a lot of different types of cards which we found kept turns interesting and varied

The rulebook also includes a few paragraphs on the lore of each card, so if you want a more thematic and story-driven experience, you could read these aloud as you play

In a world of endless card games, I'm not sure how much longevity this would have in our collection and it might not get played often, but we enjoyed our plays of it and think it would make a good gateway for those new to the hobby

Thank you @thamesandhudson for sending this our way through @ukbg_review_circle 🥰

Whilst we wait for This Book Will Make You Psychic to land in our realm, I wanted to share some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into it. Notably the illustration process by the wonderful Jesus Sotes (www.jesussotes.com)

@jesussotes was commissioned to create a mysterious atmosphere for the book, and set piece illustrations were briefed for various chapters and exercises, with some stimulus imagery.

The same is true of writing. You have to get something on paper to see if it's what you want. You can't think your way into an outcome, you have to take action and create something to "bash up".

Jesus put it beautifully:

You don't have to see to believe.
You have to believe in order to see.

Pandora’s Box is a light weight, fast paced card game based on the famous story where players unleash curses, creatures and effects while trying to stay in the game or hold onto the Hope card.

The details:
Title: Pandora’s Box
Designer: Jen Russell
Publisher: Thames & Hudson
Player count: 2–5 players
Time: 15–20 minutes

The gameplay:
The goal is to be the last player standing or hold the Hope card when the deck runs out.

Each turn is simple. You draw a card then play any number of cards from your hand. Cards represent monsters, curses and effects that target other players, forcing discards, stealing cards or otherwise disrupting their plans.

A key part of the game is building triads which are sets of three black bordered matching cards. Completing a triad triggers powerful effects and can swing the game quickly, giving players strong incentives to hold onto certain cards or push their luck.

Play continues with players attacking, defending and managing their hands, trying to outlast opponents while keeping control of key cards. The game ends when only one player remains or when the deck runs out, in which case the player holding Hope wins.

My thoughts:
This one is very take-that and chaotic which is not my natural style of game. However, it's quick to learn, plays fast and there’s constant interaction as players chip away at each other’s hands.

I really liked the tension around the triads and deciding whether to hold cards for a set or play them early adds a nice layer to what is otherwise a very straightforward system.

In my plays, it felt like a game where timing and opportunity mattered more than long term strategy as the cards and your hand could shift so rapidly.

Overall, Pandora’s Box is a light card game that works well as a filler, especially for groups who enjoy a bit of player interaction and unpredictability. I also adored the artwork by @jesussotes and that alone made me want to play again.

AD: this game was sent via the @ukbg_review_circle but all views remain my own, unbiased thoughts.

Pandora's Box is an artefact in Greek mythology from which all human suffering was released.

With 'Greek' being the theme for this week's #ThematicThursday we thought we'd give you our thoughts on Pandora's Box by @thamesandhudson a card game, and (hopefully) not the origin of human suffering.

You will, however, be trying to make your opponents suffer by eliminating them. You begin by drawing a card and then playing as many as you wish. Cards may allow you to steal cards, take a sneak peek at your opponent's hands, all with the aim of trying to collect groups of 3 cards known as Triads. A group of the same Triad can be played to eliminate an opponent. The last player standing wins.

But there is hope. Literally. The Hope card starts at the bottom of the deck and offers protection from a Triad elimination. When the draw deck is empty the game is over and the player holding Hope wins. So as well as searching for Triads you'll need to keep an eye on where Hope is.

👍 It's a lovely small box game that's easy to learn & set up

👍 The artwork by @jesussotes is gorgeous (the Minotaur is Emily's fav), and the rule book contains a short section of rules before giving background to all the mythical creatures in the game. If you go out early, you can always have a read

👍👎 At 2 players, we found it a bit mechanical. Draw card, play card, wait until you've got 3 Triads. When we played with 4 it was much more strategic, cards are distributed more, so it makes searching for sets and Hope more of a challenge. At 2 it's a quick game, but that stops eliminated players from sitting out too long

👎 Some won't enjoy the take-that elements, but there are lots of action cards that give you options to strike back

We enjoyed playing Pandora's Box with a bigger group, it's certainly not as bad as the Greeks made out! It's a fun, filler game with plenty of player interaction. This could be the game for you if you like games like Gold Hustle or The Radiation Game.

🚨 BoardSenseless was gifted a copy of Pandora's Box by @thamesandhudson so we could see what we think and give you our views. We've not been paid and there's no influence on what we've said

In a world where AI slop seems to be silently invading all corners of everything ever, we should start out by recognising the exceptional artwork from @jesussotes here because it really is beautiful - giving a modern day feel to authentic Greek art

The game itself is an interesting one - effectively a last one standing affair through player elimination. At 2-players it becomes a straight-up battle with some more strategic decision-making

Oddly it had a small reminder of Exploding Kittens of all things. Play is really simple - draw a card and play as many as you want before ending your turn. It gives you the potential to chain a whole host of mythological entities together, or keep your cards close to your chest, ready to strike at the right moment

Elimination comes from playing a set of trials including Cyclops, Hates, Furies and Harpies to take out an opponent. That is unless they counter that with the single Hope cars that starts at the bottom of the deck but can quickly move around

It really is so easy to get to grips with and I do like the hubris of having to physically open Pandora's Box to play. I was worried it might feel a little too procedural and... basic I guess. There felt like some potential for it to focus in on a single path to eliminating people but it really never plays out that way. I've had games take 5 turns and games take 15 minutes

There's been some balance between how you tactically play your cards to get more information about opponents and pull the trigger at exactly the right moment

I'd also say that the art really balances the gameplay, which is good because it could easily overshadow it. Very much enjoyed this one and it's easily one you can pop in a bag and play in a coffee shop

Thanks to @thamesandhudson for this gifted copy

Review - Pandora’s box 🏛️

🏛️ In Pandora’s Box, you unleash chaos on other players while trying to be the last one standing—or the first to complete a triad without someone hitting you with Hope.
On your turn, draw a card, then play as many action cards as you like from your hand, resolving their effects or you can choose to play none.

🏆You can win in two ways: complete a triad, or be the player holding Hope when the draw pile runs out.

🏛️ I’ve mostly played this at two players and found it really fun. At that player count, it’s fast paced and full of take that moments.
With more players, it becomes more strategic, as you need to think more carefully about which actions will best improve your hand and chances of winning.

🏛️ The rulebook dives into the Greek mythology behind the characters in the game. It’s an interesting read before you play, and it helps make sense of what each card does, as the gods and their actions are thoughtfully linked.

🧠 Over view. This is a fun and fast paced race to win card game, it’s quick and incredibly easy to pick up. I enjoyed it very much.

REVIEW: Pandora’s Box by @thamesandhudson with art by @jesussotes

Pandora’s Box is a light card game that sees you attempt to see your way past the dangers escaping from Pandora's Box into the world and be the last one standing.

Gameplay is simple, draw a card then play any cards that you'd like to. Cards have abilities that may impact the cards in yours/ your opponents hands, or there are Triad cards which are creatures that come in sets of 3. If you manage to get 3 of a kind in hand you can play these to eliminate an opponent. Then play passes to the next player until either all but one player is eliminated, or the draw pile is empty.

Thoughts:
🏺On the whole I really like the art and design. I didnt particularly enjoy the art of The Hundred Eyed card though. I will say I appreciated that thematically the card abilities matched well with the characters on the cards.
🏺The rulebook has a wealth of information and backstory about the cards in the deck including mythology and larger artwork prints.
🏺The rulebook was a little challenging, it's worth noting that Triad cards are black bordered cards, all other action cards can be played without being in a set of 3 which wasn't clear in the rules currently. There is a video which does help clarify a few things.
🏺The game works best, we found, at 3+ players, there's more player interaction and less likelihood that one player will run away with the game.
🏺You do have methods of mitigating potential loss, some action cards allow to negate the triads which can be interesting as you need to plan your attacks at the right time. I found planning to hold two attacks at once to be the best option to eliminate someone.
🏺Once you get into the gameflow, its a really quick game. A good filler option, it's light and has some good back and forth.

Overall we enjoyed Pandora’s Box as a light filler style game. It has a similar feel to Love Letter in a way with its simplicity yet decent strategy. Pandora's Box has more actions and abilities, which adds a little more complexity but still remains accessible.

A quick unboxing of Pandora’s Box (we're going to skim past the obvious joke here about opening Pandora’s Box and delve straight in)

Inside we have a deck of cards with some gorgeous artwork (except for The Hundred-Eyed card whicb is a bit creepy 🤣)

You have two aims in the game - either get everyone else out, or have hope in your hand at the end of the game. It feels like a nice little card game in a similar vein to Love Letter.

More to come on this soon!
