Four years of learning, growth, and amazing memories. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, and I’m so grateful for the family, friends, and professors who made this possible.
@gavyn_gates for the best photos (taken on the walk to grad!)

I’ve always found it strange when people say black and white photography is about removing color. If anything, it makes me pay more attention to it.

Every color carries a weight, a brightness, a place it will eventually occupy in the scale of greys. And not all colors behave the way we expect. Two tones that feel completely different in real life can collapse into the same grey, flattening everything. Others that might seem to clash suddenly create separation, depth, a kind of quiet structure.

So choosing colors becomes part of the composition, even if the final image won’t show them. A deep red against green, a muted blue next to something pale, darker fabrics against luminous surfaces. These decisions stretch the spectrum, giving the image room to breathe.

I guess that’s the paradox I keep coming back to: to work well in black and white, you have to see color more clearly, not less.
