Justine Formentelli has been a long-time collaborator with Small Works CIC, participating in several of our group exhibitions, including Bury My Songs at Terrace Gallery in 2024, Seasons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2025, and Women’s Day at Outhouse Gallery in 2026. Over the years, we have come to know Justine’s distinctive practice, with its rich, emotive layers of colour and texture. It was a pleasure to finally spend time with her in the studio and gain a deeper insight into the ideas, materials and processes that guide her work.

I still can't quite believe that this gorgeous exhibition has ended and that so many of these incredible works have already left the building!

The other winner of the 2026 Irving Open is .... (drum roll please) .... Connor McIntyre, whose painting 'Vestiges of the Golden Age' struck me as utterly brilliant and original and inventive as soon as I unpacked it. (And so deliciously green.)

Connor McIntyre (b. Liverpool, 1960) studied Fine Art at the University of Plymouth (graduated 2012), followed by an MA in Contemporary Art Practice (Painting) in 2015. He has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2025, New English Art Club Annual Exhibition (2023, 2024, 2025), ING Discerning Eye (2023), RWE (2023. 2025), and the Jackson's Art Prize / Painting Prize (shortlisted in 2023 & 2025).

Connor writes about his work:
"Depictions of nature are rarely mere representations of the external world. In my work, landscape serves as a kind of cartography - mapping not a geographic place, but a more nebulous terrain. I draw on traditions, both Eastern and Western, the resulting works are not records of place, but reflections on dream, reality and the other thing."

I'm thrilled to have been introduced to Connor's work via the Open Call, and I'm very much looking forward to working with him towards a solo show at the gallery in 2027.

These are the five works that Connor submitted to the Irving Open:

1. 'Vestiges Of The Golden Age', 2025
Oil and lacquer on aluminium composite board, 53 x 33 cm. Available at Irving Gallery, £900

2. 'Minutes Of The Last Meeting', 2025
Oil and emulsion on wood panel, 90 x 65 cm

3. 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vadda', 2025
Oil and emulsion on wood panel, 90 x 65 cm

4. 'Hurry Up Please It's Time', 2025
Oil and emulsion on wood panel, 60 x 50 cm

5. 'Milk Or Money', 2025
Oil and emulsion on wood panel, 90 x 65 cm
