There are a million ways to Burn. Somehow, this year we got to experience almost all of them ✨

Comfort & Joy has been a hearth of the Queerborhood and San Francisco queer community for 25 years.

Together, 60 illustrious queers from around the globe built more than a camp. We built a home.

I’m immensely proud of what Comfort & Joy accomplished. Not because everything went to plan - it certainly did not - but because when things broke, people stepped up. When someone needed help, somebody appeared. When the work was done, the camp came alive.

Months of planning, fundraising, packing, hauling, building, and losing our minds became real: a place where people could walk through our neon flags and belong.

And then, somehow, we actually got to leave it… Tomorrow 😉

In so many ways, this was a bucket list Burn - DJing the Afterglow Tent after the Naked Pub Crawl, seeing Black Rock City from the right seat of a Piper Comanche, and driving all over deep playa in a pirate ship art car.

Through it all, we came home to this beautiful queer family we’d built in the dust (and mud).

For me, being entrusted with that responsibility as Mayor has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

Going with @ry4ny for his first Burn made it even more special. Ryan dove into the deep end: taking on a leadership role, redesigning and managing our infrastructure, solving problems nobody knew we’d have, and becoming a critical advisor through the Burn’s biggest challenges. And once the dust settled, we remembered why anyone goes through all this trouble in the first place.

Thank you to every camper, leader, builder, artist, DJ, friend, neighbor, and beautiful stranger who made Comfort & Joy and Black Rock City what it was this year.

Until next time, see you in the dust! 💖🔥🌈

A love letter to Burning Man

This past week at my first Burning Man was jaw dropping and life changing. It was a week filled with perseverance, friendship, love, laughter, and amazement.

On the first day I fell off an art car and fractured my elbow. I persevered through the pain to have an incredible week. Miraculously, I recovered within a few days and was able to wave my arms dancing the night away by the week’s end.

One of the most difficult challenges with this injury was the inability to ride a bike around the festival’s campus known as the Playa. I instead had to resort to the shoelace express which proved to be a very unique and different experience than most other Burners. At first doing mainly solo expeditions, I explored the entire Black Rock City. Walking around I discovered so many unique camps with offerings such as saffron tea, belly dancing lessons, mini golf, and even a vinyl dj spinning 1960s Peruvian Psychedelic Rock.

I am so grateful for my camp family Fantastic Sams for their warm welcoming hospitality throughout the entire week.

Can’t wait for the Burn next year!
