POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A major shout-out to my @northwesternalumni community 💜🐾

Telling the story of my fourth great-grandmother, Lucy Sutton, and her 1846 fight for freedom has been the journey of a lifetime. Along the way, the Northwestern family has shown up at every turn:
✨ Sharing early iterations of this story with the brilliant storytellers at NUEA West.
🎙️ Diving into the legal contest and the Lucy Sutton Suite on the Northwestern Intersections podcast (Ep. 132).

🤝 The constant encouragement to keep bending the arc of history toward justice.

Now, the story enters its next chapter: my debut novel, The Last Will of Lucy Sutton, is officially live for PRESALE! 📚✨
It traces the parallel arcs of Lucy’s historic journey in 1846 and the modern archival discovery that changed my life forever.

That Red Wax Seal

"I called the paralegal Ann back, breathless, as she explained that her attorney service had gone down and found the will. She mentioned a legend about a clerk of the court during the 1901 Great Fire of Jacksonville, who rescued some files. Ann wanted to know what I wanted to do about the will now that it had been found.

“Take a picture!” was all I could think of at the time.

“What about all this other stuff in the file?” she asked.

“I don’t care!" I said, not thinking. "I just want to see the will.”

In short order, across the internet, across the country, and across nearly 170 years of time came an image -- a sepia faded envelope, emblazoned with a red wax seal. Another image showed the front and back of the one sheet document that John Sutton had used to set his slaves free. At last, I could read all the words in the careful brown aged script on a zoomed-in image of the page. And I got the answer to a mystery I’d wondered about since I first saw the excerpt in the family reunion brochure — Did my ancestor John Sutton have a white family?"

People often ask me, “Are you an AirBender?”

I smile and say, “No, not AirBender—ArcBender.”

The idea comes from abolitionist Theodore Parker, who wrote in 1853: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

A century later, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. echoed those powerful words, making them a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. Decades after that, President Barack Obama wove that very phrase into the Oval Office rug as a daily reminder of our collective duty to keep pulling that arc forward.

An ArcBender is anyone who steps up, fights for truth, and actively bends history toward justice.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that presales are officially OPEN for my new book, The Last Will of Lucy Sutton—the first installment of the ArcBender’s Journal Trilogy! 📚🔥

This story uncovers the extraordinary struggle and courage of my ancestor Lucy Sutton as she fought for freedom and dignity for her family against all odds.
