Thirty six years ago, the world’s attention was on Italy.

As the Official Timekeeper of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Seiko celebrated the tournament with a series of football themed watches. To introduce the collection throughout Latin America, they turned to none other than Pelé. A true football legend and one of the greatest players to ever play the game, he was the perfect ambassador to bring this collection to life.

The dial is framed by the flags of the ten member nations of CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America. As striking as the dial is, the detail I was especially excited to see was the iconic flowing script days of the week, printed in Spanish for the Latin American market. If you know Seiko, you know these script day wheels have become something of a collector favorite. It’s a subtle detail that adds so much character to the watch.

I can almost picture the original owner buying this watch during the tournament, wearing it for every match, and keeping it long after the final whistle had blown. Decades later, I bet this watch still holds memories of what it felt like to experience the World Cup that summer in 1990.

This watch is more magic than metal, and exactly why I love it so much. I’ll be wearing it proudly during today’s World Cup Final. After that, it’ll make its way to my friend in Colombia, a football agent, who I know will enjoy it even more than I have.
