The Beating Heart: Johannesburg Pride March, 25 October

This is the day that defines Pride Month. The Johannesburg Pride March has been running since 1990, making it the oldest Pride event on the African continent. What started as a small and brave protest during apartheid has grown into a massive annual celebration of love, resilience, and visibility.

Sandton’s streets become rivers of colour, with floats, DJs, dancers, activists, families, and allies all moving together in one giant, joyful procession.

The “+” symbol represents all identities beyond L, G, B, T, and Q; including intersex, asexual, pansexual, non-binary, and more. Each identity reflects the vast diversity of human experience and deserves equal recognition and protection.

Too often, people outside the “main” letters are erased or ignored, making them more vulnerable to harm. Recognising the “+” means refusing to leave anyone behind. Pride is a celebration of every identity, visible or invisible, and a demand that safety and dignity must be for all.

A HUGE thank you to the Courtyard Hotel Waterfall City (Johannesburg) for the complementary night stay at this amazing establishment to ease my attendance at the Queer Met Gala. And thanks to hotel manager Brendan Luttig and staff for the endearing hospitality (and the chef on breakfast duty who made the most scrumptious egg omelette,... but not as yummy as he 😋)
