A look back at The Illusion of Stillness at @hotelemblem

Presented together with @2rt.studio , @segd_sanfrancisco , and @sffirstthursdays, the evening brought art, technology, and community together through the work of @whats_inside_of_my_brain , @mr.muratpalta and @jiayuerrr

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to all of our collaborators who helped bring the evening to life — from the artists and team behind the exhibition for being part of the experience.

A great night of conversations, new perspectives, and seeing digital and physical art meet in the same space.

Hi everyone! I’m Rach 👋

I work at Channel 4, and for the last six years I’ve been running a passion project with friends in Sheffield, curating emerging artists and sharing their work through our letterbox art project @_theartpost.

What started as a way to showcase local creatives has grown into an international project. We’ve introduced people to some of their new favourite artists, shared thousands of artworks through the post and had the most fun along the way.

More recently, we’ve been mapping the people, places and objects that inspire artists. What we’ve discovered is that inspiration so often comes from ordinary life. Familiar places, everyday encounters and the little things we might otherwise overlook.

And that’s the thinking behind our next chapter.

Art Post Editions is a new way to collect fine art prints from remarkable artists we’ve discovered along the way. An ode to ordinary life, the things that inspire us and the different ways artists see the world.

We’ll be releasing thoughtfully curated editions, produced as museum-quality giclée prints on heavyweight archival paper, with the quality and feeling of owning an original artwork, but at a price that makes collecting art genuinely accessible.

Every print will also arrive with a letter introducing the artist and the inspiration behind their work. Because we think the stories are worth keeping, too.

It’s been a long time coming, and I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on!

Coolest things I saw in September:

@jiayuerrr “Notes” (pencil on paper) A portrait of the never-ending project of self study — annotating, dissecting and revisiting past verions of ourselves.

I love the materialization of “blood, sweat and tears” in this clay mobile by @rocioboyanova .Suspended droplets of each type of liquid transform abtract idea into tangible expression.

This sari creation by @rohit_mane for @jasminegmuller keeps the familiar architecture of a sari (sweeping drape, embellished border and pallu) while playing with proportions and transparency with a tiny skort and sheer fabric. Ethereal sultry dream.

Kokon earrings by @pregomesh .So gooooddd!! This darkened silver gives them a slightly punk edge, while maintaining the intricacy of a tiny flower. The tension between something a little tough and something so dainty.

These ghungroo socks by @bhavyarameshjewelry are SO cool. I grew up tying ghungroo around my ankles before Indian classical dance practice, so I loved seeing them reimagined on something as ordinary as a sock. Tradition, sound and whimsy all in a simple everyday object!!

“The Pilates Studio” by @maryambaniasadi93 is a contemporary scene rendered in ancient technique. It has the visual language of Persian miniature painting, with flattened perspective and meticulous little details.

Loved the liquid-metal effect of this hand-pleated silk gown by @andrewkwon_official .The silk catches light like polished metal while the skirt feels fluid and weightless.

Detail in this stone sculpture at the Bhu Caraha Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu. Precision and softness in an extraordinarily long, ornamented braid.

Something so satisfyingly uncanny about these juicy rings by @stonefruit .The dangling gemstones remind me of droplets of juice dripping between fingers.

Dua Lipa wore this mommy needs a cigarette baby t-shirt by @maisonrapito and I’m afraid I might need it. No further notes.

Still cannot believe this is a real PAINTING. “The window I wish you’d sit with me at” by @annieoklaas (oil on canvas) captures diffused light and shadow through a sheer curtain. Feels like a memory.

On October 1, join @hotelemblem ,@2rtstudio and @segd_sanfrancisco for The Illusion of Stillness, a special edition of the SF First Thursdays Art Walk (@sffirstthursdays)
Look closer, then take a step to the side. Through lenticular printing, multiple views come together in one physical artwork, creating a sense of movement and depth without a screen. Textured printing adds detail you can see up close, while AR lets you discover another layer of selected works through your phone.

A little programming update from The Birdcage 💗

We’re extending Jiayue Li’s show a little longer, and we’re so happy to keep the work with us as we head into fall.

Next up, we’re very excited to be teaming up with @glass.rice again on 10/24 for a new show featuring @danaethepainter ✨

As The Birdcage grows, we’re continuing to shape a programming schedule that feels intentional to our space, our little street, and the community around us. We want to be thoughtful about the artists we invite in, how their work lives in the space, and how we can represent and support them in a way that feels warm, collaborative, and true to what we’re building here.

We’re figuring it out as we grow, with a lot of love for the artists who trust us with their work and the people who keep showing up to see it.

More to come! 🫶🏽⚡️💫
