Last week I joined four pals and climbed Cathedral Peak in Tuolumne Meadows. So great to be back on the stone with close friends @jib.ellison , @loralohara and @timmyoneill and Earl Alderson, with Timmy and Earl rope-gunning for the old dog. It was Loral’s first multi-pitch climb. I met Loral when she reached out after reading my book Life Lived Wild and wanted to connect. Not that easy as she’s an astronaut and was reading the book from the International Space Station. NASA made it happen, and we had a great hour-long Zoom while she literally floated around showing me the ISS. Photos by Timmy, Loral and Earl.

Almost ten years ago, the ever-persuasive @kristine_tompkins negotiated an invitation for me to join the legendary Do Boys for a descent of the Rio Baker, recently safeguarded thanks to the epic Patagonia Sin Represas campaign, to celebrate Doug’s 70th birthday. Paddling this mighty and fought-over river was glorious, but the most memorable part of the trip was listening to Doug and Yvon trade one-liners and egg each other on to more radical strategies for protecting our home planet. Two old friends & adventure buddies, sharpening their wit against each other toward a shared enormous goal. It was an honor to listen in.

A lot has changed since then, of course. But yesterday’s big announcement from @patagonia made me grateful for these iconoclast mentors with no patience for convention, no qualms about calling out the truth, and no bounds for their devotion to wild nature. I don’t think I’d be running a business today were it not for Doug’s stern encouragement to be my own boss, and Yvon’s legendary example of business as a tool for the earth-positive work you want to do in the world.

I’ve spent plenty of time in the puzzle of what’s best to do—what’s effective/needed/enjoyable/life-sustainable—and would argue there’s benefit in puzzling this out. As Doug often reminded us, you have to figure out what mountain you want to climb before you start the approach.

I’m not sure I have the answers yet, but I do think there’s something deeply freeing and mind-expanding about traveling lightly in wild places. The experience helps us think beyond the (consumptive and competitive) needs and norms of contemporary capitalism and stretch into a place of greater simplicity AND abundance, hard work and real joy. So it’s not a shock to me that a business run by dirtbags is on the cutting edge of choosing nature+action over wealth. Can’t wait to see what the move inspires.
