It’s a day of mixed emotions for me. This is the first year I’ve not been a part of the Australian Wearable Art Festival @australianwearableart since its inception in 2019. I’ve stayed 100% true to each of my 100% natural and biodegradable wearable art outfits (no mean feat I can assure you, especially when performed by a living, moving model). As a self taught, intuitive creator I am amazed at what I have produced over the years. Each outfit reveals itself in the creating and is a reflection of self for that year. 2025 - Metamorphose Winner - Innovation award 2024 - Tigresa Winner - Sustainable Nature Category 2023 - ‘little soul’ 2022 - Cybele 2019 - The Chrysalis Winner - Sustainable Nature & Emerging Artist I’m really looking forward to being an audience member this year and being surprised and delighted with all of the works on show 🌟 Congratulations and good luck everyone, see you all soon. 💗 #artimitateslife or #lifeimitatesart #growingpains

Why am I so passionate about the Sustainable Nature category in Wearable Art? 100% of materials used MUST be biodegrade and do no harm to our planet. That means no wire, no cable ties, no glue, no paints… everything needs to be provided by nature for these outfits. But WOW look what we can do when we put our everything into creating them! Amazing and tricky. Proudly (and gratefully) sponsored by @argon_law Winning outfits - Sustainable Nature @australianwearableart 2019 - The Chrysalis - Vivien Eardley, @catsclawcreationsaustralia 2022 - Rhea Nova - Eloise Galea @ellaweave_creations 2023 - Recurvata - Karen Lynch @karen_lynch_fibre_art 2024 - Tigresa - Vivien Eardley @catsclawcreationsaustralia #sustainablebiodegradablewearableart #donoharm #fromnaturebacktonature #amazingandtricky #fromnaturewithlove

Introducing 2024 SUSTAINABLE NATURE Finalist, Vivien Eardley @catsclawcreationsaustralia Vivien has been a finalist (and hooked on wearable art) since 2019 - where she won both the Sustainable Nature category and Emerging Wearable Artist. The sustainable category is probably the most challenging with its Key words being: Environment – Explore – Challenge – Chemical Free – Nature - Organic. It asks the artists' entry to be 100% biodegradable! Vivien says "I like the challenge of this category, and love using natural foraged materials. Often, I use Cat’s claw creeper vine (an introduced invasive weed of national significance) as my base material. I can pick it (well… pull, tug, struggle it out of the trees and underground) in varied thicknesses and lengths. It has good structure, is pliable when fresh and dries hard like a stick, so is good for support and form. However, it can be scratchy and heavy so problem solving these issues is an interesting challenge to overcome. It seems that from working in the Sustainable Nature category I have rewired my brain. If I do try to ‘cheat’ (as I see it) by using wire, cable ties or glue guns etc. when working on other weaving projects, I get blocked and find it very challenging to complete. Often, I’ll revert to a natural fix and the project flows again. By using all natural materials, when my pieces are ready, they simply decompose and degrade back into the earth from where they came, possibly providing sanctuary and homes for native critters in that area. No clogging up landfill here! My wearable art outfits’ find their identity develop and grow along the way until finally a personality presents itself! Feeling a bit nostalgic today 😍 maybe its the rain 🌧 😁 In 2019 at @eumundisquare @helenperrysc and @wendyroe2 was all kinds of fabulous and started us along the incredible journey of Australian Wearable Art Festival. AWAF 2019 Category Winners & Runners Up First-time wearable art entrant Jodie Whitaker @jodiewhittaker_fibreartist won the Avant-garde and Supreme Awards. Runner Up Avant-garde was Cynthia Hawkins @mynameisshihandicreate who also won Haute-couture and Headpiece. Trashion Winner Karen Lynch @karen_lynch_fibre_art has continued to impress the judges in the years since, winning the 2023 Sustainable Nature category. Amelia Jan Tahere Angus @ameliaj.designs was Runner up Trashion 2019. Belinda Kuhlewein @huskandvine wowed the audience with her Botanical Beauty winning the Floriana category. Runner up in Floriana was Milliner @madame_melanies I showed the back so you can see how important it is to have a 360' focus. The Sustainable Nature category also saw a first time wearable art entrant take out the winning prize. Vivien Eardley @catsclawcreationsaustralia took an invasive weed - cats claw and turned it into a stunning piece of wearable art. Jodie Whittaker @jodiewhittaker_fibreartist not content with making one complex entry decided to enter two pieces and was Runner Up in this category. The Student Winner in 2019 was Teddy McRitchie @teddymcritchiedesign The last photo gives you a glimpse of the magic of that first show with Cindy Vogels @cindyvogels as one of the 2019 judges alongside Peter Dwyer @peterdwyerdesign and Jandamarra Cadd @jandamarra_cadd Though there had been a show @eumundisquare in 2017 and a smaller though rather marvellous Runaway Art event at The Imperial @imperialhoteleumundi in 2018 this was the real beginning. #wearableart #beginnings

Wearable Art can be addictive both for the audience - who want to be witness to The Extraordinary' walk the runway - and for the artist... who becomes addicted to creating something more each year - to challenge themselves, to look at the natural world and see possibilities. That is so true for Vivien Eardley @catsclawcreations who used the invasive introduced cats claw to go from weaving baskets to creating the AWAF 2019 Sustainable Nature award - and as a first time Wearable Artist taking home the Emerging Wearable Artist title! It is no secret that this category is the most challenging as it requires 100% natural materials. NO hot glue guns! Organic naturally dyed materials such as hemp, cotton, silk and linen can be used OR fibres and materials direct from nature, as in the cats claw that Vivien used in 2019. For this, her 3rd AWAF year, Vivien has added banana fibres (sourced from her property) to her repertoire along with a few other special materials, not least of them being feathers from her own chickens! To see what magic can be created direct from nature pop online and buy a tickets so you are there at one of the three shows where extraordinary hits the runway! #wearableart #sustainablenature #trashion #floriana #avantgarde #visitsunshinecoast #textilefibreforummagazine #naturelovers #bananafibre #sustainable Australian Wearable Art Festival 2023 August 11th and 12th @venue114bokarina TICKETS 🎟 🎫 🎟 🎫 🎟 🎫 🎟 www.australianwearableart.com.au @sunshinecoastcouncil @visitsunshinecoast @freshprm DeDeyne Family @innoosamag @hellosunshinemag @927mixfm @convergemarketingoz @horseandwater @artwearpublications @sunshineplazaofficial Photographer: Barry Alsop @barry_eyeswideopenimages Models: @jickey_jack 2019 and Abigail Patterson 2022.

Australian Wearable Art Festival 2023 - Expressions of Interest open now - closing 31st January 2023. Exploring the categories.... SUSTAINABLE NATURE – This category is the opposite of Trashion in that it must utilise 100% natural materials and provides an opportunity to showcase the diversity (and possibly the wilderness) that is Australia. Seeking out materials that creatively highlight our natural environment land and sea, this category allows the exhibitor to explore extreme fashion to present new artistic visions while at the same time, embracing natural fibres such as wool, linen, silk cotton, and encompassing natural dyeing where unique colourations are sourced from plants fungi bark etc. This creation must be able to biodegrade back into nature from whence it came… This category is perhaps the most challenging in its seeking to work completely in harmony with nature, while allowing us to delve deep into a truly sustainable future 🌎 #wearableart #sutainablenature #natureshautecouture #textileandfibreart #naturestextures EOI Form @ Designer Entry www.australianwearableart.com.au

Why is it… the moment you can’t do something it’s the only thing you want to do. 🙄🙄😆 Loving looking back on these outfits and so grateful to my awesome models @abigailpatterson_official @jickey_jack @phoebe_evie for bringing them to life and @australianwearableart for providing such an inclusive and exciting platform on the Sunshine Coast for us wearable artists. Bring on the next event. I’ll just have to spend this time over thinking planning. 😆
