I've checked out the latest installment of the VHS series, VHS Mixtape. As someone who enjoyed the previous installments, loves a creepy found footage horror and anthology, I thought this was a prettt fun watch.

This anthology is different compared to the previous installments as it uses sound and music as the main source of terror like a MTV-style show from hell. As expected, there are segments that I enjoyed and some that are hit and miss. I thought the first three segments were genuinely create, creative and creepy. Especially the puppet segment that featured great character designs, and gore. It was like Sesame Street and The Muppets gone evil 🤣
The practical effects and gruesome kills are easily among the highlights.

Unfortunately I felt that the rest felt ridiculous, cheap and too focused on comedy rather than the actual horror. But I did liked some of the funny moments with the hosts. I did miss the dark and disturbing atmosphere of the original VHS and VHS 2. This installment is much lighter in tone and more carefree than the previous entries, embracing the absurdity rather than trying to be consistently terrifying.

Overall, VSH Mixtape may not be the best in the series, it is a solid entry with creative ideas with twists and turns, practical gore effects and dark humour. It is worth the watch for the segments I enjoyed, but the others are forgettable. If you are a fan of the VHS series, this is worth checking out, but if you're expecting genuine scares, you may be disapointed by the comedy heavy approach.

📼 Halloween tradition is alive! As a long-time fan, I just watched #VHSMixtape on @shudder and it was an absolute blast. ⚡
Instead of repeating old formulas, this entry takes huge risks by blending puppetry, stop-motion, cosmic horror, and heavy metal culture. It feels like a nostalgic love letter to 90s horror! 🎬🍿

Huge shoutout to the amazing directors and talent that made this sonic nightmare possible:
👹 @gwar for being the most chaotic and epic hosts.
🎻 @jihadbrent and Alex Hsu for that incredible Lovecraftian tension in 'The Music of Mr. Sze', masterfully directed by Ernest Dickerson.
🎭 @reneezhanz for creating a bloody masterpiece with 'DDDD' alongside the iconic puppets from @hensoncompany (Jim Henson's Creature Shop).
🌀 flyinglotus for pushing boundaries and blowing my mind with the incredible stop-motion masterpiece 'Another Cabin'.
🪵 David Moreau for the claustrophobic dread in 'Heartbeat'.
🎹 @rza for bringing that unique musical grit and slasher energy to 'Death Tone'.
🎸 @thebandghost (Tobias Forge) for the brilliant dark humor in 'Premature Burial'.
Here is my spoiler-free breakdown of every single segment. Check out the slides! 👇
💬 Let's talk horror! Which segment was your favorite? Did the puppets or the stop-motion freak you out as much as they freaked me out? Let me know in the comments below! 👇🔥
