There’s nothing that could have prepared me for being a 60 year old returning to the neighborhood where my epic journey started when I was 18 in 1983.

Having finally met and settled into my real self and soul after the most magnificent 42-year odyssey imaginable, I have been reflecting so much lately about all of the people who have believed in me and held me up through it all. There have been so many of you and I feel like I’m only now able to appreciate it.

There were a few months in ‘84 between the time I learned I couldn’t afford to stay in college, and deciding to sign up for the Navy, when one of the first people who saw something in me let me crash at her place, the top floor of the building behind me. She introduced me to a world that felt like a different planet from the rural upbringing I’d just left. Art, culture, socializing, good food, fascinating people, and learning how to use a napkin and say please and thank you.

I felt such a wave of indescribable emotion today as I walked past it and around the old ‘hood because I realized that the time here was like the butterfly flight that starts a hurricane and man oh man am I grateful for getting swept up by it. I can’t imagine a human life that is more full than the one that I’ve had.

Thank you, Jill. Thank you, Georgetown. Thank you, everybody.
