Hartlin Does It Again: Macs Edge Flyers in Marathon Shootout

📸 by DW Photo

For the second day in a row, the Halifax McDonalds found themselves needing extra time to decide the outcome-and once again, Jacob Hartlin delivered in the clutch. After scoring the overtime winner on Thursday, Hartlin capped off Friday afternoon’s contest by netting the shootout winner as Halifax edged the Moncton Flyers 3-2 in a tightly played matchup.

Moncton opened the scoring with 42 seconds remaining in the first period when Jaxon Somers struck on the powerplay, assisted by Nathan Weber and Malik Bourque-Vigneault. Halifax answered early in the second, as Charlie Benigno buried the equalizer just 1:49 into the frame, with Riley Creelman picking up the helper. In the third, Hartlin gave the Macs a brief lead at 10:41 with a goal set up by Will Shearer and Gavin Sudds, but the Flyers responded just 27 seconds later with Marc MacPhee finishing off a feed from Somers and Weber to tie things up at 2-2.

After a scoreless overtime, both teams relied heavily on their goaltending. Sam Madgett stood tall for Halifax, making 41 saves and stopping six of seven in the shootout. Simon Cormier turned aside 27 shots for Moncton and kept his team in it through seven shootout rounds. Benigno and Hartlin each scored in the shootout to help Halifax improve to 2-0, while Moncton falls to 1-1.

Looking ahead, the Halifax McDonalds are back in action tonight at 7:30 pm against the host Kensington Wild. The Moncton Flyers will return to the ice tomorrow at 12:30 pm to take on the East Coast Blizzard.
