The project is shaped by a West Coast creative team led by Vancouver-based arrangers Jill Townsend, Christian Morrison, Dean Thiessen and Cindy Dai, alongside Nanaimo-based Andrew Homzy. Deeply rooted in British Columbia’s jazz community, these artists bring diverse stylistic perspectives and lived musical experience to Mitchell’s songs, reawakening them through the rich textures and sonic power of a modern jazz orchestra.

This bold program explores the sharp cultural insight and deep emotional journeys at the heart of Joni Mitchell’s songwriting — themes of identity, freedom, love, and social consciousness that remain as relevant today as when they were first written. Reimagined through the subtle and dynamic range of sonorities in a jazz orchestra, Mitchell’s music takes on new depth while retaining its essential intimacy and honesty.

Jennifer Scott’s expressive, improvisational vocals serve as the ideal conduit for this repertoire. Renowned for her emotional intelligence and elastic phrasing, Scott brings Mitchell’s lyrics to life with immediacy and nuance, while Sister Jazz Orchestra provides a sweeping and sophisticated musical canvas that reveals fresh layers of meaning in these iconic songs.
