Nanning, a young farm boy on Amrum Island in the spring of 1945, has absorbed the ideas of good and evil taught by his society and staunchly Nazi parents. As news of Germany’s imminent defeat reaches the windswept island and Nanning feels his country coming apart, he must do what he can to provide for his family and prepare for the future.

AMRUM, Fatih Akin’s resonant coming-of-age tale, is the film being discussed at this month’s Kino! Film Salon — a free, hosted online club for German film fans! Join us this SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, at 11AM PT / 2PM ET by registering at the link in our bio. October’s meeting will also feature a special guest — Karl Walter Lindenlaub, the film’s cinematographer, is joining us for the discussion! 🎥

We’re less than a week away from September’s Kino! Film Salon — a free, online club for fans of German film! 🎬

Join us SEPTEMBER 13 at 11:30AM PT / 2:30PM ET to discuss WESTERN, directed by Cannes Jury Prize winner Valeska Grisebach. An intense, slow-burning take on the classic western, the film follows a group of German construction workers sent to a site in remote Bulgaria. The new surroundings awaken a sense of adventure in the men but also magnify their prejudices and suspicions, both of the local villagers and each other.

This Salon will be coming to you live from the Toronto Film Festival, and we’ll be joined for a short interview by Grisebach herself! Don’t miss this month’s meeting — register at the link in our bio.

Elderly Hirayama is utterly content with his life — when not occupied with a job cleaning Tokyo’s public toilets, he spends his days listening to music on cassette tapes, reading, and taking photos of trees. Unexpected encounters also lead Hirayama to reflect on himself and the nature of finding beauty in the world.

Wim Wenders’ most recent film PERFECT DAYS is our pick for this month’s Kino! Film Salon! Join us this Sunday (AUGUST 16) at 11am PT / 2pm ET for a free, English-language discussion.
