When we interviewed China’s most famous sex blogger, Muzi Mei, exactly 20 years ago (!) @jinyumi and I had only recently come up with the idea to launch an internet TV series in Beijing… Internet shows were in their infancy and YouTube hadn’t even been bought by Google yet. We had done six eps of Danwei TV and @mauromao had come up with the hard hat gimmick, but suddenly the Muzi Mei episode was racking up tens of thousands of views a day. I don’t even know if the term viral had been invented yet but this video helped launch a fun chapter in our lives in 2006 Beijing and so to celebrate its 20th anniversary I’m posting it here on Instagram. A few months later @annasophiesufei would join us for the next chapter. Shout out to @resonance_thesoundof for the theme song. Check out the original version still up on YouTube with 1.4 million views.

Our kiddos’ first time on the Great Wall. A spectacular experience for us all as a family ❤️
Some stretches were scary.

Historically, the U.S. government has been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 talks with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi about the problems with U.S. government funding, even before the recent cuts. She argues that China human rights activists should instead seek funding sources less likely to tie donations to other geopolitical agendas.

The U.S. government has long been a primary funder of China-related human rights work. Human rights advocate @yaqiu123 argues that instrumentalizing human rights for geopolitical “great power competition” can undermine the long-term credibility of the work. Yaqiu also argues the U.S. has a “double standard” approach to human rights: its international work is heavily influenced by its foreign policy agenda, and human rights at home are deteriorating.

Recent deep cuts to U.S. support for China human rights work have dealt a serious blow, but they might also provide an opening to explore other, perhaps better, models of funding. In a conversation with Hǎi 海 editor @jinyumi, Yaqiu says China human rights activists should try to source funding from members of the Chinese diaspora, who have the financial resources and political inclinations to support human rights work for its own sake.

My dear friend, director Fan Popo @popofan put together this program at the @filmfestdresden and I’m honored to be a part of it. Here’s what he has to say: This programme is based on my observations of language-related films, also a reflection of my own life—how I’ve spoken, or failed to speak. In 2010, Anna Sophie Loewenberg was my flatmate in Beijing; her iconic webcast
“Sexy Beijing”, known for its witty street interviews, opened windows for many audiences. Our relationship also deepened my own interest in intercultural communication.
A decade later, in 2020, I documented a racist attack against me during the Covid pandemic in Berlin. In that moment, I found myself unable to defend myself-not because I lacked words, but because language itself failed me. It was only through the short video LERNE DEUTSCH IN MEINER KÜCHE that I was able to reclaim my voice, and the expression made me stronger. It proves that poison can be turned into medicine.
At a time when freedom of speech is under threat and fake news floods everywhere, words remain fundamental. We need to speak out and stay in touch! And believe it or not— even in silence, we remain connected, because our tongues can be united
This programme is also a tribute to the Soura Film Festival in Berlin-not only because I discovered EVERYTHING IS EASY, EVERYTHING IS HARD there, but because the festival itself stands as a model for communication and exchange.
Popo Fan. I created Sexy Beijing with @lukemines and @jinyumi.
The program will include a screening of Meet me in Chinatown. Thank you to @clarion_sf and @grantavenue_follies . 「Meet Me in Chinatown

August was action packed and passed by in a flash.

I've really got to get better about posting things when they happen because I had things to say about each of these events but now it's past the end of the month and I feel like I can only quickly summarize it all. Working backwards:

🏅Aug 31 - Poor Kaiser came all the way up to NYC for the jankiest awards show we'd ever attended and we didn't even win. This org "supporting Asian American creativity" decided to give the award to SCMP's podcast - we're apparently extending AAPI to mean HK-born HKers + an Oz white guy. lol. But it's always fun to hang out with the full team. + check out the comedian who performed - he was the highlight of the night.

🦁Aug 28 - ex-Publicis Beijing colleague is now here in the USA so we went for coffee at the Met. Fun to catch up even if we're all depressed about the state of 2023 China.

🎉Aug 26 - some extra bday brunch shots because i love u all

🦪Aug 13 - took my aunt out to Mermaid Inn for their happy hour oyster deal. Been trying to make more restaurant dates with her because I'm worried about how skinny she is. Am I asian parenting my aunt?

💪Aug 10-13 - cousin Jessica visited and um... I guess I immediately put her to work on my kitchen backsplash and volunteering with me at our neighborhood "buy nothing" market. Sorry Jess! Hope I can make your next trip more relaxing.

🌞Aug 6 - Young China Watchers picnic in Central Park. Trying to revive this community - lmk if you're in NYC, interested in China and wanna join.

😎Aug 4 - I bought a really really good chair.

It’s been 15 yrs since I drove a stick shift. Today, I got schooled by the winey, narrow, steep + hilly streets of Mendexa. So worth it!
