Good times ripping around Madarao Japan with my bro @jisk_flow. We spent nearly a week skiing and exploring this hidden gem of a resort in the Nagano prefecture. Madarao/ Tangram Ski Circus has some great tree skiing, nice pow stashes, and excellent natural halfpipes. We would play in these natural halfpipes for several laps, trying different approaches and different hits in the halfpipes. They were super fun! Definitely recommend skiing these resorts and staying @snowballchalet for the best on hill hospitality. Going over some clips from Japan and finding some good memories. These clips are from Hakuba Cortina in the Hakuba Valley. I met up with @jisk_flow and @natt__geo here and got to get some good turns with Sean. Cortina has some of the best terrain in Hakuba and a good Onsen ♨️ in the weird hotel. We got lucky on some fresh snow this day, but you can hear the crust underneath on some turns. We did a bit of side country out of the resort boundaries and found some excellent snow! Finished off the day with a nice soak at the Onsen and headed back down the mountain to Hakuba central. A lift ticket for the day was around 5,000 💴 or $31 USD. Not a bad day for free powder refills and good times with your homies! #skijapan #hakubavalley #hakubacortina #japow #freerefills #skithetrees #skiadventure

Riding the Bootfitting Wave, It’s Never Summer for @steezeninja

“Summer?” For freeskier Robbie Forbes, a Taos local born and raised, it’s “Non-existent!”

In 2023, Forbes went down to #Australia to spend his second summer there. One of his bootfitting mentors Charlie Bradley was like, “If you’re sick of landscaping, this might be something you want to do.”

Bradley (@charliebradley863) was clearly on to something. 2023-24 @skitaos ski season is his 5th consecutive winter thanks to this tradecraft that you can currently find him wielding skillfully at Taos Ski Valley shop @Bootdoctors.

Bootfitting is a pretty specialized line of work. Forbes explains that there is a network of well-respected shops around the world that act as a co-op of sorts. “Every shop needs boot fitters” he says. “You just have to tap into the matrix and you got a gig somewhere.”

That’s what Forbes did, in constant pursuit of pow as the year-long ski season flips hemispheres each year.

During the season here at home base, most of the time he is going out on his own simply because of logistics with a two hour break on work days. So he’ll go out and see who he can link up with on the fly. The most serendipitous of encounters, turn out to be the most memorable on the mountain.

“I’m always down to ski with someone, because it always makes skiing better,” he explains. ”What makes skiing so fun is being with your crew, being with your buds. When we [the @shireratsgang] do coordinate, the level of fun is unmatched. Like the best ski day every time, and the most memorable. We find a spot, we do some tricks, and we’re always going big to step it up. That’s where you become a better skier, gaining confidence and strength in the group, because we believe in each other’s ability. Nothing can touch you with that good energy.”

We had so much fun learning about and with Robbie that we had to take a deep dive into his baby backpack beginnings skiing w Dad, travels #downunder, his style of #shredding, and how his approach to bootfitting threads through it all.

As a skier, mountain lover and 7-year patrol veteran, being part of the first team in history to successfully assist in bootpacking and skipacking Kachina Peak "wall to wall" in December 2023 will go down as one of the snow-related accomplishments I am most proud of.

Snow control efforts are not an exact science. But the benefits of painstaking manual compaction of early snow layers in strengthening the snowpack is well-established.

Every bootpacking season looks different due to weather and other considerations-- it is awesome to think that we achieved what few expected, and that this achievement might be worth replicating in future seasons with cooperative weather and adequate crew size.

Kudos to Taos Ski Patrol in maximizing windows of opportunity, and harnessing the power of the "Pack Rats" when conditions allowed!! 🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀😸

I am already looking forward to the 24/25 bootpacking season, and putting the word out to patrol from other areas (such as Pajarito, Sipapu, Angel Fire and Sandia), who may be keen on pitching in with a day or two on "the Wall." 😮☺️

After all, I don't think anyone will complain if 25+ people show up to pack Al's Run on Day 1! 😋
