Japanese master cut —

Between light and shadow.

We stayed there, wearing black,
watching the sky change.

For a moment,
darkness felt beautiful.

my most important shoot ever:
Not long after Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022
prof. mark Hannaford invited me to photograph newly set up #medics4ukraine (now @wemfund ) in action:
they were (and still are) delivering trauma meds & emergency medical training to the frontline.
on my 2nd trip we witnessed the aftermath & destruction of irpin city & bucha at the same time as russians, their stooges & social media bots were trolling the world: saying the dead in the streets were actors faking to have been murdered.
amidst the vast devastation: experiencing torn apart & burnt buildings & meeting survivors still shaking with ptsd
we witnessed Russia’s deliberate targeting of Ukrainian culture as they try to eradicate more than just the people of Ukraine, but also their identity
I had an idea to address the news fatigue, false narrative and Russian lies.
i wanted to present the facts of what had happened here, in a different way & perhaps to a different, less news-aware audience.
With a full Ukrainian production, coordinated by @zootmagazine & WEM, staying with a lovely family in Bucha, who just months before had Russian soldiers tearing through their house, lives & neighbourhood, killing indiscriminately
i returned to shoot ‘spirit of resistance’ which is a deliberately contentious piece: made to provoke a reaction & renew the conversation: to refocus people on Russian atrocities
There’s a lot to untangle in a pseudo-fashion story shot in an active warzone.
most location based fashion stories look for an interesting background to sell clothes
in our shoot, i photographed Ukrainian artists in Ukrainian clothes, & we did the reverse: we used clothes to tell the story of the background.
here’s a selection of the photos with some BTS by Olga Beznos @o.bzns from our emotionally heavy shoot.
individual portraits, bios and stories will follow soon…
there’s so much information, credits and things that need to be said, its hard to condense here
This story was widely refused by every major news outlet, magazine and newspaper worldwide.
so please share widely.
and support @wemfund as they carry on supporting Ukraine
SLAVA UKRAINI!

A flower on her shoulder.
A movement — almost a ritual.
