My father would've been 75 today.

He died of a car crash on the 4th of July, 22 years ago. Alcohol was a factor.

We were very close.

I didn't understand trauma. I internalized and ignored the pain, disappointment, embarrassment, and shame of losing my main paternal figure in that manner at 16 years of age.

He was a human, bound to make mistakes. His troubles were the same most of us deal with.

I've forgiven him, accepted the trauma, and allowed myself to feel the pain.

We connected again in a dream a few years ago—we hugged tight and I told him how much I've missed him.

It felt real. It was real.

He did what he could while in this realm. And it was enough.

Feliz aniversário, Pai. I love and miss you very much.
